Here is a good place to start to get an idea of what is DnD. Basically a role playing game you play with friends, as to the how there is not set way, some play in person with just their imagination, others with lots of props such as maps, minis etc. Others play online using just voice chat programs, or a virtual table top. There is not real right or wrong way to play it's more what works best for your group. My best advice is to search for a game near you, most likely adventurers league and give it a try.
D&D is a game based on story telling. As such you have a Dungeon Master/Game Master who tells the story in which the Players' characters exist. The story is centred around the players' characters and these characters influence the story through their actions. You can buy story modules with lots of details which make it easier for the DM to tell a compelling story. If the DM feel up for the task, he can also create his own story in his own world, but this requires a lot of work from the DM. As D&D is a story telling game, the "Playground" is the story, which can take place anywhere you DM decides, fantasy world, real world, post-apocalyptic world or wherever. If you by "Playground" are referring to the actual physical 'maps' that some people are using, these grids are entirely optional and are used to visualise battles to make it easy to understand what the DM is describing and to see what is actually possible to do. You can either buy or make these grids. They are basically just a 'map' split into a lot of small evenly sized squares. These squares represent 5x5 feet areas that make it easier to calculate range between things. What is on the actual map depends on the DM. Maybe you draw what the players can see, maybe you have bought or made actual structures that you put on the grid so the players know exactly what you are talking about. It all depends on how much time, money and effort you want to put into it. So basically everything Dos246 said above.
There are people streaming themselves playing D&D, maybe it would help you get into it if you gave some of those shows a try. One of the most popular shows out there is called Critical Role: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=byva0hOj8CU
