Hey guys, great site here and seems helpful so I’ll ask those who know better than I (which should be most of you since I’m extremely new as are my two players).
So, ive let them start off with level 6 characters. One a Fighter, one a Rogue. The fighter gets two attacks per action, and two actions I’m told. He’s under the impression he should be getting 8 attacks per action but that CANT be right. If somehow it is, I’ve had to nix it down to once a day/rest because I’d then have to make opponents extra strong which would screw up the game balance and kill the rogue too easily and/or leave her with little to do when it came to combat.
He’s citing Extra Attack which it looks like he gets at level 5, so theres two attacks and thats fine. But then hes claiming Action Surge.
It reads to me he only gets Action Surge once per short rest. And even then, it would equal 4 attacks using that, then requiring a short rest.
Am I off base? Surely he cant get 8 attacks per turn?
The 8 attacks is either him not reading the rules right or cheating and hoping you won't catch it because you're new. Once, I was in a campaign with a fighter who could make 8 attacks in a round. It was extremely irritating.
8 attacks per turn, every turn, is definitely not correct.
A standard fighter will get 2 attacks when they use the Attack Action on their turn. They can also use Acton Surge once per rest (usually around 3 times per adventuring day), which gives a second action allowing for another 2 attacks.
If the fighter is using two weapons (both light) then they could make an extra attack using their bonus action each turn - though that will be at reduced damage unless they have chosen the right fighting style. If they have access to the Nick weapon mastery and the Dual Wielder feat then they can increase it to a total of 4 attacks per turn. Using Action Surge will only add 2 attacks, for a total of 6 at most.
I can't think of a way any lvl 6 fighter gets 8 attacks in 1 turn. Maybe with a haste spell involved...

Thanks! I knew there was no way the imbalance like that was ok.
