I think this is the opposite question though: Once you've donned the shield, can you still use your shieldhand to wield a longsword in 2 hands?

The equipment section is not perfectly explicit, but you need to hold a shield, but holding a shield in a ready state is donning it. Unequipping is doffing it. All historical shields I am aware of required one hand and that hand could not effectively assist in with wielding a weapon.
