I was wondering if there are any core rules for larger than normal gemstones. I would assume that most gemstone are of medium size to start but is a larger one worth more and if so how much more.
Nothing official. It's generally treated like a form of currency. Even within the official material they are all over the place. Take the jacinth. Listed in the DMG as a 5000gp gem. Appears in Tales From the Yawning Portal as a treasure find: "huge jacinth" worth 1,000gp. In WDotMM it's just a jacinth for 5,000gp.
That's what I do. Just try and remain consistent. Easiest thing to do is to make sure price is determined before anyone finds the treasure. If you get caught up in a cost inconsistency, use clarity/flaws to explain it away. For example: 10 sessions ago, there was a 1" diameter ruby valued at 1500gp, and the players just found one the same size valued at 2000gp. Now you have players saying they both should be 2000gp. This, plus the fact that my players always seem to hoard gems is why I just tell them the value when they find it. It's meta, but saves a lot of time.
Note also that gem value varies wildly based on quality not just size. Color, Clarity, Cut, Carat: the four Cs of gem value. Carat is size, but then a perfectly clear diamond is better than one with imperfections. A gem carved intricately, or uniquely colored is also worth more. There is no reason why two emeralds of the same size should be worth the same price, unless they are identical in all other measures of quality.

As much as the DM says.
