No, I don't think cats should have darkvision. That's a fantasy ability that doesn't even exist in the real world. Darkvision is superior to infrared vision in some cases (more fine details being visible with the former) and inferior in others (detecting location of invisible creatures). Anyway, no darkvision.
I honestly haven't read the whole thread but needed to reply to this. Owls have Darkvision 120ft. So why do they have darkvision and Cats don't? It's contradictory. Either they both should or they both shouldn't. In fact even Rats have darkvision and their ability to see in low light is worse than cats.
I would prefer that 1/2 the PC races/species out there right now that have darkvision just get low light vision. I know that isn't a thing in 5e rules, though. Most beasts that currently have darkvision should have low light vision.
That said, between having crappy ability to see in dimlight and having darkvision, I would, as a GM, allow cats to have darkvision if the player at my table picked one as a familiar or often shifted into one as a Druid.
