I'm trying to figure out what the difference is currently between a weapon with a "10 foot range" (a yklwa) and a "10 foot reach" (a whip), when they're both used as melee (not thrown) weapons in close combat. Can anyone illuminate me?
But it also says in the description that it's a poor thrown weapon, implying that it's meant to be used as a sort of one-handed spear with the option of throwing it (or so I thought). Does that mean it's normal reach when not thrown is 5 feet? If so what's the 10 in the 10/30? If thrown, minimum range of 10, maximum range of 30?
Edit: I'm a fool, I looked at the weapon more closely on the character sheet and indeed, a yklaw reach is 5 feet, sorry for the bother!
The fact it's a 'poor thrown weapon' is why it has range 10/30. Because it isn't stated as having reach, that means it's normal reach is 5'. The 10 is the normal thrown range and 30 is the max thrown range.
When a weapon has range X/Y, that means attacks can be made at range up to Y feet, but if made beyond X feet, they have disadvantage. So if you make an attack with a Yklwa at a target 20 feet away, you'll have disadvantage.
"Reach" means the weapon stays in your hand. "Range" means the weapon (or its ammunition) leaves your hand.
That's about the simplest way I can think of to describe it.

The yklwa is a thrown weapon, range 10/30

Ah, I see! Thank you, I hadn't really understood how the thrown weapon stats worked before this.
"Reach" means the weapon stays in your hand. "Range" means the weapon (or its ammunition) leaves your hand.
