Honestly, the PHB needs a rewrite. Too many rules are vague and underwritten that it causes dozens of exactly these kinds of discussions.
Unending discussions where neither side backs down because the rules as written are inadequate to change the mind of their opposition. The SAC was supposed to help end these arguments, but because "they are not rules," they only serve to make one side even more obstinate while doing nothing to convince the other.
And thus a 40 comment back and forth with no sign of a consensus.
My biggest hope for something like this is two fold. First, get some exposure to some rules that I may not be as familiar with along with different points of view to help me determine what my general ruling would be on the topic and alternate rulings that may come up. Second, to find ideas about builds that I may wish to explore down the road. Any clarification that comes to other players from my part of the discussion (whether what I say makes them believe my side or more obstinately in the other side makes no difference) is purely a bonus. I gave up a while ago on trying to completely come to a consensus and will typically make multiple attempts only if I feel like my position was misunderstood.

Dude, you've hit it right on the nose. I understand the desire to not update things out of sense of reverence for physical books, but WotC really needs to understand that we're well into the digital age. The people buying physical over digital are doing so because they intrinsically value having a physical book over ease of access & accuracy. They're making a willful decision to go with the inferior form of product, and that's perfectly fine! That's their thing.
I think WotC also underestimates the community willingness to use/download/print PDF updates to their physical books. AL changes so much that it seems like the only valid rules for AL are in digital form already. Those that are ardently against digital updates are probably just sticking to home games using their physical books as-is, so who cares, right? When the holdouts won't go with the flow anyway, putting up a wall against updates doesn't bring more enjoyment of the product to anyone.
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
