What I want, is to build a DEX based fighter, with the option of using a light defensive off hand.
1 base armor
Considered a light weapon for purposed of Dual Wielding attacks (bash).
Considered Finesse for damage bonuses.
Buckler's gain no benefits from the Shield Master Feat (haven't given thought to a feat for bucklers).
Thought about adding when wearing light armor and not wielding a weapon in the same hand as a buckler, gain an addition +2 AC (or possibly half your DEX bonus to AC again fitting the light armor, nimble fighter and giving them more viability). But its just way simpler to just use the +1 for all situations.
And while I don't care about using it with a bow, how does being able to use a buckler with a bow complicate anything? Its the same math as just using a shield. That isn't an added complication. And it does add an option for those looking for a more dex based dualist type fighter. It adds no less that a shield or any weapon that fits the flavor a player wants their character to add. And would just be a line added to the armor chart, and paragraph for the description in the books if it would have been added to the base rules. Oh no the horror.
So you want to get an AC boost and the option to TWF from a mundane item. This right here is exactly the kind of thing they don’t want to do, because it’s such an optimized pick. As things stand, DEX Fighters can TWF for an additional chance to crit, trigger on hit effects, etc. or go Dueling and a shield for about the same dpr with less spike potential but +2 AC. Or you can get all the perks of TWF and most of the AC benefits of the other. There’s a nominal trade off in net AC, but I expect most number crunchers would weigh it as coming out ahead. Note that the old Dual Wielder feat gave a +1 AC but that perk is conspicuously absent in 2024.
And it simply becomes mandatory equipment for any ranged Fighters if they can get an AC boost at no penalty.
