OK, so I need some advice. I will try not to go into too much detail on the rare chance my fellow party sees this thread (I know at least two of them are trying out this service).
My characters backstory involves his family doing something kinda evil and pissed off some very powerful beings, and the land where this evil deed happened is now cursed. My guy didn't have anything to do with it (obviously), but these beings don't see it that way as it was his bloodline that did it. Now, we are very far off solving this problem as the DM has literally just introduced this plot point, but something has already occurred to me. The only logical way I can see this problem being solved is through the death of my character, through some MacGuffin helping to break the curse as it properly would be something that would appease the beings. And the problem is, I don't want him to die. I like this character, and whilst I can see it being a fitting end to him, esp given the personality I have given him, I don't want to stop playing him, even though it is properly something that won't happen for a long while yet.
So I guess the point of this thread is, has anyone else ever been in a similar situation where their characters death makes a lot of sense, but they still don't want to do it?
basically your character is in a tough situation, while I've never sacrificed a character I've been put in situations where my character would do something different then what I want them to do, so consider this, what's better for the party to have fun, your character living, or ending this curse, if they don't seem that into this plot line and curse, then don't kill your character over it, but if they really seem to be enjoying it and you know it would let them down if they didn't get a good ending from it, then do it, it's your choice but I hope this helps

I don't think I have faced this in a DND game, but back in the day I played in a party of two for a Star Wars Saga Edition game, and my character was a droid assassin who had been converted to bodyguard by the man whom he was supposed to assassinate (lucky crit on a roll to restrain me). He couldn't hack deep enough to get rid of my old programming to kill him, but he did write in a new routine where I had to protect him. So there was a constant conflict between me trying to get him killed but not doing the killing directly. Eventually the droid decided that if this person fell to the darkside they would not longer be themselves and he would be able to kill him (loop hole), and it was working! However eventually we ran into a Jedi who after much persuasion convinced the guy I was protecting to become part of the Jedi order. My character saw this as a direct thread to his plan, so he marched into the bay where the Jedi was keeping his ship and opened fire. The scene was epic because nobody saw it coming, and I didn't want to lose Axon as a character, but I knew that's what he would do. The other player at the table said his character watched from the cockpit of the ship. It was pretty emotional.
It's still talked about between myself and the guy who ran that game, and we joke that Axon will come back (maybe he backed himself up on a data disk somewhere), but honestly I don't think I have felt as strong a connection to a characters death as I have that one.
