Firbolgs underwent a pretty large change in 5e (which I like, personally). However, they don’t have any specific gods. I’m planning on playing a very devout NG firbolg druid, and from previous editions Hiatea would probably be the way to go. But with the altered lore (no longer specifically giant-kin) and lack of official 5e Hiatea stats, I was wondering if anyone had come up with a fixed deity or even pantheon for firbolgs. I’d also appreciate it for my own world I’m currently building, where firbolg tribes occupy a significant niche in the world.
5e Firbolgs seem to be a mash up between earlier edition Firbolgs and another giant-kin called Voadkyn.
My vague understanding/Head-canon (given that they have really layed much out for Giant-kin in 5e), is that Firbolg are Forest-Gnome, Woodelf, Cloud/Frost/Stone Giant hybrids. Given that Gnomes have a similar maximum lifespan of 500, and that Speak with Small Beast parallels Speech of Beast and Leaf . Just a whole lot Forest, magical-mushroom guided free lovin.
Given that most firbolgs dont generally have names in the normal sense, I figure that whatever they warship wouldnt have distinct name but rather descriptions akin to the Tabaxi Naming scheme.
Yeah, I thought maybe a description naming method would work best. I didn’t notice the tabaxi similarity though. Sort of like the gods of Exandria.
Thanks for the help.
The gods of Exandria are pulled directly from D&D/Pathfinder. When licensing became a thing, they switched from using copyrighted names to descriptors. Like how Earthbreaker Groon went from being a high priest of Kord to high priest of the Stormlord, or how Pike's goddess Sarenrae became the Everlight.
Same gods and goddesses, just given descriptors to avoid legal issues once Critical Role became more of a brand name with its own product line. I believe it was specifically the Tal'dorei sourcebook that drew the line in the sand. I don't think Ashley ever gave up the habit of calling her goddess Sarenrae, but she's not once said Kord that I can recall.
More on topic, in earlier editions they were more Giant-kin and had the same pantheon of gods. However, the Firbolg more or less rejected the Ordning , and even in older editions talked about them being particularly attuned to druidic culture, from what I can read. So you could look to the Giant pantheon for a deity, or perhaps take gods themselves out of the question to pursue the druidic religious practice.
