I've been playing for a bit now, currently running a half-elf Lore Bard who's a bit too smart for his own good, and a fire Genasi Paladin/Barbarian multiclass who's pretty much just a himbo who gets angry when his friends are in danger. But I've had some ideas bubbling in my head, and I'd like to air them out for folks to maybe shoot some more fun stuff at.
So probably like many others here, I've been following CriticalRole's current campaign somewhat closely, and Marisha's character Laudna has been a little bit of an inspiration for the first one. My base idea is a warlock-y type, either youngster or a fairly old person, not necessarily a puppeteer, but one who enjoys dolls and such. Very Madeleine-esque in the "do you want to play with me?" way, so I was wondering if there are any ways I could maybe incorporate stuff like the Sentinel feat and bind spells, to force enemies to stay close to me, and a push/shove spell if "I don't wanna play with you anymore". Another possibility is to do something like Hector from Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (or the Netflix show, more people will probably be more familiar with that. Though keep in mind, Isaac is a pasty, BDSM ginger guy in the game), having a special connection with death in that way.
Second is pretty simple, which I just immediately thought of when reading the Clockwork Soul subclass for sorcs, a watchmaker of sorts, who through their love for making clocks and whatnot, somehow found a connection to the weave and has been using that to maybe help his work somehow.
Those are just some basic ideas I've had in my brain for the last couple days, if anyone's got ideas of what spells to possibly run with any of those, that'd be neat!
For a puppeteer-style character with martial properties my thought goes to Battlesmith Artificer... it gives you a construct to command in combat, you get Medium Armor and Martial Weapons to use, and you could use spells like Lightning Lure and Web to add some battlefield control.
An alternative could be Hexblade Warlock... gives you martial skills as well, but you can also easily use Eldritch Invocations to add push, pull, and even slow traits to your Eldritch Blast which can easily be reflavored as using strings. You could even reflavor the Accursed Specter as creating a puppet, or using the soul of a slain enemy to animate a puppet you carry.
Honestly, I had always considered the Accursed Specter to be a weird, kind of silly feature that doesn't mesh well with the rest of the Hexblade subclass, so I was actually pretty excited when I realized that it paired so well with this particular character concept, even though I initially only went to Hexblade as my recommended subclass just because it's the Warlock subclass that gives you the most martial strength.
EB with Repelling Blast would be interesting for the "I don't want to play with you anymore" angle, while Grasp of Hadar and Lance of Lethargy could both be interesting angles to help keep people more in place.
The way that you described the Clockwork Soul character reminded me of Sylar from the TV show Heroes. Granted, Sylar starts of homicidal and spends a fair amount of time in the Chaotic Evil realm during the show, but the character could give you some ideas about what kind of challenges the character could face coming go grips with their new found abilities.
Love the puppeteer idea. Artificer is a natural, but consider the Artillerist subclass as an alternative to Battlesmith. Tiny cannons can easily be tiny puppets… that move on their own and spit fire! Your homonculus can fly on invisible strings around the battlefield. Arcane firearm is a dummy holding a wand. You’re basically wielding a magic Chucky! At high levels you’ll get Animate Objects, the ultimate puppeteer spell. Consider grabbing Mage Hand for distance puppeteering and using Magic Mouth at 2nd level for true talking puppets as lower level spells that match up.
Battlesmith gives you two puppets at most (with homonculus). A high level Artillerist can have three puppets at a distance, plus your dummy arcane firearm. You’ll be like Jeff Dunham with firepower!
