Hello there! I'm going to join a homebrew version of Lost Mines of Phandelver. There I'm planning on playing an Scourge Aasimar Divine Sorcerer that I will multi-class in Paladin. He/Him pronouns. He's also pretty young, barely 20 years old. Lawful Neutral Alignment. Also we have a Tiefling Rouge in our party so I don't want character conflict to get too out of hand. (mainly cuz the tiefling is just a golden retriever and I love him already)
Now I'm struggling with interesting concept Ideas for his backstory and what kind of Celestial he "comes" from and what his reason is. I've been thinking about a soldier theme, he's very cold and emotionless. Maybe he was raised by a cult? I'm thinking about some dark twists and maybe even a manipulative guide or evil god or something. I don't know much about Celestials and I'm also quite new in DnD (I've been playing since February) so I don't know much lore.
I'm hoping to find some ideas here for his character and story.
The cult angle is really cool. The thing about Aasimar is that they don't necessarily need to be people who are directly descended from a celestial... they just need to somehow be infused with a measure of divine power. Here's my pitch...
Your character is the son of a priestess loyal to Bane, the Lawful Evil God of War and Order... not quite a cult, more an organized religion with intent to conquer the entire world through military might. Think of them more like the most extreme possible version of the Knights Templar. Using their connection to Bane they infused your pregnant Mother with some portion of Bane's divine Might, with the intent of creating a physical Avatar that Bane can inhabit... more or less attempting to turn you into Bane-Jesus. However, you showed no signs of divinity throughout your childhood and were dismissed as a failure. So you were just raised as normal, trained as a paladin, and by the time your true nature started to manifest you had perhaps become disillusioned by the church, so you left to seek your own fortune and avoid whatever fate they had originally intended for you.
The Aasimar could be sent down from Mount Celestia in service an agel deva or a diety such as Aerdrie Faenya, providing guidance in the form of dreams and visions urging to destroy evil within Phandalin, Or it could be a mortal soldier from the region of Phandalin who's dormant power within recently lit up somehow, showing some celestial features and greater awareness of evil brewing around as it feel it and bleed light.
The Followers of St. Mikkael are dedicated to doing good, caring for the poor and helpless, taking in orphans, and giving the lost a new purpose. Just as their leader, the fallen angel Mikkael, commands - he who was so unjustly thrown off of Mount Celestial for daring to visit the Material Plane to instruct the people in the right way to live. However, some don't see it this way, some call them a dangerous Cult that brainwashes their followers into worshipping Mikkael and terrorizes or executes any who try to leave or deviate from their sacred commandments. [Your character]'s mother was blessed by the favour and attention of Mikkael and bore you, his holy child. Raised among the faithful, on the ramshackle farm they call "the Ranch", you were doted on by all the Followers along with your dozen brothers and sisters who were all the children of Mikkael with different mothers, and taught of the blessings and goodness of Mikkael and the evil that turned people away from his righteous path. That is until you started asking questions...
...overhearing Mikkael raising 'concerns' about you with your mother, and suggesting 'corrective actions' be taken lest evil turn you away from Mikkael's love. You realized you were no longer safe and fled the cult, hiding your true identity and your Divine nature as best you could for fear of the harsh reprisals of the cult... until....
