I’m running a campaign set in my home brew world and is set on the furthest island known before the sea becomes inhospitable with a all powerful kraken god which is the personification of the rage of the sea. When the adventurers go in to the only town on the island they find the residents of the town silently hiding in their homes refusing to leave the pcs aren’t about to go up against the kraken yet as they are only level one but they do need to kill the cultist that has been trying to drown the island. So this lead me to wonder do any of you have any tips on how to run this?

Is the cultist a worshipper of the kraken? If so I would expect them to be really arrogant, their God is raging, blocking sea travel. They should be publicly demanding sacrifices, easy to find.
I would expect some new converts that think this the only way to save their lives, not particularly faithful.
Probably a wanna be hero type that is too young or too old or too wounded to fight the cultists but is mad at his fellow villagers being too scared to do anything.
Consider a book that taught the cultists to be cultists. It could be magical, or non-magical. Perhaps it was a history intended to warn about worshipping the God that went into just a little bit too much detail on what the prayers you should never do. Or perhaps it was an evil book written by the cult.
I would also plan out a treasure of some kind - possibly a potion or scroll that would either be something someone made long ago to fight the cult or perhaps be something the cult made for their own uses. The players should only find this after they defeat the cult.

Thanks a lot! You did so much of the work for me!

I'm usually a fan of getting to the action quickly on Day 1, but you've got a really good role-playing scenario. Let the party knock on some doors. Give the charismatic characters a chance to shine. Somebody knows somebody who knows where they are.
How experienced are the players? Do they have characters yet?
