So I'm starting a game in a new group. It's one of those "blind date scenarios" with little to no interaction with the DM or other players beforehand, and I'm having a hard time choosing what to play. Any help or advice is welcome. Here are some details:
- We're starting level 5 - The other two players are a Life Cleric and a Draconic Sorcerer - There's only 3 players, so anything to help with action economy is a good thing - No multiclassing
Ok so the Cleric & Sorcerer have healing & AoE damage covered. What they are missing is single-target damage, battlefield control and someone to take hits and not die.
An Armourer Artificer might work, a bit low on hit points and not much help in terms of action economy but hard to hit and good at protecting your friends, can pick up some healing spells in case the cleric goes down.
Zealot Barbarian is another option highest single-target damage in the game, and pretty tanky.
A melee-ranger either Beastmaster (for extra action economy) or Gloomstalker (for sneaking ability) could be good, some healing spells if needed decent hit points and defenses, and some skills to prevent the party getting eaten by wolves when camping out over night. They also get some great battlefield control spells and eventually Conjure Animals.
Every party benefits from a Paladin so that's also a good option, Find Steed gives you more action economy, healing, single-target damage, and tankiness is all there. Vengeance is probably your best bet for action efficiency, but Conquest has some nice battlefield control
Overall, I'd probably go for a Tasha's-Beastmaster Ranger (or Drakewarden if you have access to it), the companion gives lots of extra utility, and an extra body on the field which will definitely help in a small party.
Sounds like you'd probably want go with a Melee or half-spellcaster class. Barbarian, Fighter, Rogue, Ranger, Monk, Paladin, Blood hunter, Artificer.
That being said, if you are an RP-oriented person like myself, I would create the backstory, personality, and playstyle first. Then pick a class that fits that vibe best.
I would probably go Barbarian, Paladin, or Fighter. Looks like a good front liner would be helpful. Unless you know the cleric will step in to melee as well, then maybe Rogue.

If in doubt, Fun > Function
