So I have an idea for an Aasimar character that will primarily be a Celestial Bladelock, and I'd like some advice.
I haven't decided which parent will be mortal and which celestial, but either way the celestial parent was called back to their heavenly duties very soon after my character was born and hasn't been able to come back yet. At some point, an accident caused by a corrupt official's incompetence will get several people in my character's home town killed. Haven't decided if his mortal parent is one of the people who's killed, but regardless, the incident will fuel my character's desire to protect the innocent and punish the wicked. Eventually, while my character is training, his celestial parent will finally return, notice his desire, and offer to give him power as his patron.
Now to the mechanical stuff:
I rolled for stats: 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 12 (my dice seem to like me)
I want him to be mostly a melee striker type character (you'd probably call him a gish, given the magic he'll get).
I want to start him with a level of fighter or paladin for armor and weapon proficiencies/masteries.
The acolyte origin seems like a good one to go with. Its description, stats increases, and origin feat match up nicely with my concept I think, but I'm open to suggestions there.
So here're my questions:
Which should I start with: fighter or paladin?
Whichever one I go with, should I take more than one level (and if so how many and when)?
And finally, which feats would be good for a character like this (I have some ideas, but I'd like other opinions)?
To keep in mind:
I don't know what level we might be going to, but I like to plan out my characters' progression as though they will eventually get to level 20.
My DM hasn't decided what level we'll start at yet, but it will be 6-8.
Str 18, Dex 15, Con 16, Int 12, Wis 14, Cha 17, Background: Entertainer - +2 Cha, +1 STR, Musician Feat -> ask your DM if you can reflavour it as more of a religious preacher rather than a musician where you give inspiring speeches to give Inspiration, take the 50 gold rather than starting equipment.
Level 1 : Fighter - Con save proficiency, Weapon Masteries, Fighting Style: Defence or GWF Level 2 : Warlock - Pact of the Blade, Spells: Hellish Rebuke, Hex, Witch Bolt, Cantrips: Eldritch Blast, True Strike, Mage Hand Level 3: Warlock - Agonizing Blast - True Strike (Swap this for Agonizing Blast - Eldritch Blast one you get Thirsting Blade) + choose your favourite Invocation : Fiendish Vigor (swap this for Lessons of the First Ones: Tough at higher levels), Mask of Many Faces, Misty Visions, Otherworldly Leap are all good choices Level 4: Warlock - Celestial, Spells: Misty Step, Invisibility, Cloud of Daggers Level 5: Warlock - Feat: Great Weapon Master (+1 STR = 20 STR) Level 6: Warlock - Thirsting Blade, Eldritch Smite, Spells: Fly, Hypnotic Pattern, Counterspell Level 7: Warlock - Radiant Soul Level 8: Warlock - choose your favourite Invocation : see above, One with Shadows is also worth considering if you aren't wearing heavy armour. Level 9: Warlock - Warcaster (+1 CHA = 20 CHA), optional: pick up Agonizing Blast - True Strike again at this level for incredibly OP AoO. Level 10: Warlock - Life Drinker Level 11: Warlock - Celestial Resilience Level 12: Warlock - Mystic Arcanum: Tasha's Bubbling Cauldron Level 13: Warlock - Devouring Blade, Feat/ASI: choose your favourite : Fey Touched, Mage Slayer, Crusher/Slasher/Piercer, Resilient:Wis are all good choices. Levels 14-20: Paladin (Vengeance)
One thing I forgot to mention in the original post: My DM is allowing access to the XGtE/TCoE version of spells that weren't updated for the 2024 ruleset.
Would you still use True Strike or would you go with Booming/Green-Flame Blade (we ignore the "weapon needs to have at least a 1sp value" part)?

Ah then I'd definitely go Booming Blade or GFB instead.

This looks great! Thank you very much!

Awesome! Thanks
One point for Paladin I saw
Smite stacking with eldritch smite
paladins divine favor spell setting off celestial warlock bonus damage on hit.
armor and shield proficiency
Is it possible to do a Divine Smite and an Eldritch Smite at the same time?
It is, but Divine Smite isn't really worth using unless you get a critical hit. There are many many better uses of a bonus action than Divine Smite.
Interesting.. thanks!
