I'm playing the VEoR campaign, and I had planned a character with the "Die Hard" theme, so I planned an Undead Warlock 12/Ancients Paladin 8.
So, as a paladin I would have Aura of Protection (high saving throws) and Aura of Warding (resistance to spell damage).
As a warlock I would have Death Ward (always cast before a short rest), Necrotic Husk and Tomb of Levistus. These would be three options for "coming back from the dead".
The character was also a Reborn, meaning he would have advantage in Death Saving Throw and resistance to poison.
In addition, he would have an AC of at least 21, disregarding magic items and spells like Shield of Fate.
It turns out that the DM decided to change to DnD 2024 as soon as the party reached level 12.
At first, most of the changes would be very interesting, especially in the Warlock.
I had also planned to leave the ASI (Warlock 12 and Paladin 8) for levels 19 and 20, to get 2 epic boons.
This way I would get the boon of recovery and the boon of fortitude, this combined with the origin feat Tough would make this guy truly unbreakable.
However, the DM decided that epic boons are tied to the class, and that we would only have access if we had 19 levels in the same class.
So, I have seriously thought about leaving aside the paladin and making a Fighter1/Undead Warlock19.
I would have access to heavy armor and fighting style as a fighter, I would have the epic boon of recovery at the last level, and I would have all the Warlock skills, plus ninth-level Mystic Arcanum.
Anyway, considering this DM restriction regarding epic boons, what would be the best option for a "hard to kill" character: Warlock12/Paladin8 or Warlock19/Fighter1?
Does anyone have any suggestions for other configurations or improvements?
I don't want to change the warlock's subclass, as it is part of the character's flavor.
Honestly, if you want to get hard to kill? At 20th level it basically doesn't matter- PCs are very hard to actually kill by the time they hit 11th level due to all the options they tend to have.
Honestly, when you said "Die Hard" I thought you meant you were trying to build a character for an adventure when you were locked in a building with a bunch of terrorists and had to take them on by yourself.

In 2024 rules at level 20, an Orc Wild-Heart Barbarian with the boon of fortitude is the ultimate unkillable character, with a grand total of : 360 hp and resistance to many damage types and Relentless rage and Relentless endurance to avoid falling to 0 hp. (Technically a Zealot with Epic Boon of Recovery has the most possible hit points in one character, but damage resistances are really really good).

Got to agree that at level 20, you'll be hard to kill whatever you do.
I have a level 8 5e drop-in character built around cheating death called Kelgar the Unkillable.
Half Orc, Ruined background (tough feat), shadow sorcerer 1/ undying warlock 7. He's got a 20 in con, and that means he's got:
Essentially, he can die 4 times and pop right back up. He also heals ridiculously well, and has some good offensive spells. He's very fun to play!
