I was thinking that in my next session I was going to make a 3D map out of carboard so my player's can get a bit more creative than the regular: white board map with some circles to mark rock and trees. Do you have any tips for how you can do this and if there is something better than cardboard. Thank you in advance and if it matters the map is going to be some kind of mansion. Once again, thanks!
You can buy a display board from places like Walmart for a few dollars. They are made of foamcore which is a nice material to build with and the fairly sturdy.
If you know anybody who has purchased electronics or kitchen ware, you can use the foam from the packing to create terrain.

You don't need a perfect map to have a fun session, so don't be intimidated.
For making maps yourself, there are different approaches and priorities - do you want realism, readability, artsiness,... You will have to find your mix. It also depends on your game and party.
Getting started is really not that hard. Decide what type of location you want, check out some reference and then get going. It's your story so there is no right or wrong; But do try to keep in mind, what story you are trying to tell, and what you want to use this map for. Be consistent, use common sense, check for obvious https://19216811.cam/ mistakes - is everything accessible, are essential components missing.
Reference is very important, especially if you have no clear idea, how the location looks like. But even if you have a concept - do some research. There are images, floor plans, blueprints for about everything. You might find things you missed, ideas to make the location more interesting or memorable or even just stuff to fill out voids.
