I’ve been working on my custom inventory and have just my weight limit in items. The problem is I only have 3 rations, and I have heard you want at least 7 for travel purposes. Is this true? What items would you recommend I get rid of in favor of more rations (if any.)
Are you in a campaign where the DM even tracks rations?
If so, how many rations you want would depend on where you're going. If you're adventuring in a big city, you really don't need more than one or two, just in case. If you're trekking into the wilderness and don't have someone in the party who can forage for food, you will want to load up on as much as you can carry
Edoumiaond Willegume "Eddie" Podslee, Vegetanian scholar (College of Spirits bard) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator (Assassin rogue) Peter "the Pied Piper" Hausler, human con artist/remover of vermin (Circle of the Shepherd druid) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
I agree with antonsirius, there’s no magic number. In games where we track them, we usually stock up before we leave town based on how long of a trip we expect. Then add some extra because there’s always complications. But if there’s a ranger or someone with a good survival check, we can take less as there’s rules for foraging/hunting. But those depend on the terrain, so we might be back to carrying more. And if there’s really an issue with weight, talk to the party about either sharing the load, or buying a donkey or something.
Also, to metagame it. The malnutrition rules say if you consume less than half required, you make a DC 10 con save or get a level of exhaustion. (5 days in a row and the exhaustion is automatic.) So each ration can last you 2 days — since you consume half, not less than half. And you can pretty easily skip days, as if you can basically not eat for several days, then once you fail the save or hit four days, eat and long rest and you’re fine. It’s stupid and cheesy and you shouldn’t do it, but it’s RAW.

Update: I have removed the poll and added enough rations to equal 7. Still, I would like some feedback on my inventory.
You have a rather silly amount of pouches, I think only 1 is needed. A pole is also rather useless in this edition.
I mean… I need the extra room to carry stuff with. Unless you think I should just get another backpack.
That aside, I went ahead and removed the pole and brought back the lock and chain.
Most DMs actually allow you to attach stuff outside your backpack, you can do it with some rope tied to the outside.
Hu. I didn’t know that. GuessI’ll have to check with mine.
thanks

There's no "correct" number
