We just happened to have a warlock with devil's sight using Darkness and a moon druid in a game, and the druid wild shaped into a giant scorpion and they made a great melee duo. It's definitely worth it. You just can't expect it to work on every encounter. It also kind of sets you up to be Fireballed, etc.
