Just started playing in AL, was a blast. reached level 2 and am changing to a Yuan-ti Sorcerer with Blue-dragon bloodline. My first level spells include Burning Hands and Chromatic Orb (spent some gold between adventures for the expensive spell component. I can do that, right?) my cantrips are Poison Spray (race), Shocking Grasp, Mage Hand, Light, and Fire Bolt (might be tentative but I'm not really optimizing it). I get one more 1st level spell and I'm not sure what to take from the PHB. what would you recommend?
I was thinking maybe Thunderwave, since it rocked the house when my party's wizard friend used it, and it great if you're surrounded. Alternatively, sleep, but I worry that it won't stay relevant for long. I'm also thinking Feather fall might be a useful emergency utility, but is falling damage a real threat in AL adventures? can anyone vouch for or against it?
I'm open to suggestions, but I don't know any spells in Volo's so it's limited to just the PHB sorcerer spell list I think.
I'm not - nor was I ever - your "obstacle" until you've deemed me as such, nor am I your wallet, my hard earnt money is not yours by deault.

I will always miss what you were, but I will never miss what you've become.
Color Spray, Sleep, Magic Missile, and Shield are all really powerful 1st level spells. I'd consider one of them. I know you are worried about the usefulness of sleep later in the game, but I believe you can exchange them out when you level up (I could be wrong).

Party comp is unpredictable at best, because I don't have a regular group.

My vote is on Shield, great utility spell, reaction so it doesn't eat up turns, and it's effects are felt from 1st through 20th level.
Not til he can afford to spend a 1st-level spell slot on a 1-turn defensive spell.
That 1st level spell slot saves him from going down from the swing of a greataxe. Which means he has one more turn to fire off poison spray or another cantrip. or even better one of his other 1st level spell slots. It's an opinion, I stand by it.
Early level I would just use cantrips for damage and take shield. If your dragon you’ll have as much ac as a paladin with shield. Is reaction so you only burn the spell slot when you really need it. I recommend then making sure your party has an aoe bulldozer. If not, you need to grab sleep to cover your team if you get into a large fray.
Do yourself a favor and grab shield spell ASAP. this spell should be mandatory for anything but very season players that will abuse minor illusion to stay hiddenr, etc. The shield spell will be valuable to you when you need it all the way to higher levels. I'd even say keep it as part of yuor defences with misty step and/or dimension door. It really is that good.

The way I see it, you've already got plenty of combat spells, so you probably need a utility spell like fog cloud or silent image.

This all depends on your DM/group comp:
If there aren't other spellcasters, you'll probably want Detect Magic
If you find yourself doing a lot of role-playing or combat avoidance you'd probably want Charm Person, Disguise Self, or Silent Image

I am with sloporion. Take some useful spells for non-combat situations: Charm Person, Disguise Self.

Witch Bolt is a good option for you I think. I also like Shield, Charm Person.
