I'm playing a relatively new campaign with some good friends, 7 players total, and the DM. My character is a Warforged Juggernaut, and my lvl 20 goal(obviously I'm not focusing on that, just ideal max potential build) is 11 fighter, 7 barb, and 2 wizard. His story is basically he was a drow who died throwing himself in front of a great elf scholar to protect him. The Elf saved his soul but not his body, and placed his soul into a new kind of war forged. Unlike other drow he wants to be a hero and guardian for all peoples, drow or not. And so he will gain the Ancestral Guardian Barb archetype as a result of the unique fact that he is a war forged with ancestors. As for his fighter class, he'll be going Brute, and I look at it as a result of his stronger than normal mechanical body. The wizard is a result of his drow soil's innate magic(and I love the war magic features, it's a little power gaming lol sue me).
But as for right now, he is lvl 3 with 1 fighter, and 2 Barb. We're level 4 start of next session, but I cant decide if I should start his push down the grind for fighter levels since I want more late level features from fighter, and feel like it might be more cool to wait till later for the reveal of his ancestral origins as a drow(Its something of a big deal in our DM's world setting), but I also know I'll be way behind combat wise compared to the other players.
So basically, I'm lvl 3(2 barb, 1 fighter) and I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions/thoughts.
If you focus on getting Fighter level 6 you'll get your first ASI a bit late (character level 6) but you'll also get another thanks to being a fighter at character level 8. So you'll have only temporarily slowed your ASI progression. Because of that you won't really be that far behind others.
Maybe continue to Fighter level 7 to get Brutish Durability and then branch out.
Just be aware (I'm sure you probably already are) that the Extra Attack feature from Barbarian and Fighter won't stack. If you have level 5 Barbarian and level 5 Fighter you only get 1 Extra Attack - not two.
Yeah, that was my main line of thinking. I figure it's only a temporary slow down, plus they're not the kind of group to get annoyed by player build, our dm is just kinda goin for more difficult encounters. And yeah, I know it doesnt stack lol. For me thats the biggest draw back of the build, but I figure it fits the characters overall theme. Plus, we might not even make it that far level wise. Be super cool if we did, but those level 20 campaigns are straight up unicorns lol. Just prepping with high levels of optimism.
Thanks for the advice. I always appreciate hearing other people opinions ^_^
