I had a player use catapult on a metal disk in a pipe filled with ball bearings to essentially create a shotgun. At first I was a little hesitant to allow it, but because it was creative and he had taken the time to get the supplies and make it happen, I allowed and it caused some really interesting combat situations!
Did you let it do extra damage as it was focused through the pipe or did you just keep it stock 3d8?? I could of done with something like this in my last session, when our barbarian was trying to attack me thanks to something taking control of his brain! 7 charges of magic missile from my wand helped, but another round would've screwed me over massively lol
If I remember correctly, I did 1 point of damage per ball bearing, but only allowed 10 or so ball bearings at once to not make the damage start to get ridiculous. It was probably a little OP, but honestly it was fun and situational, so it never really became an issue
i'd probably allow it also - just for creativity sake, but with very limited damage and only once or twice. the catapult only launches something 90 ft before the object hits the ground..I can't imagine its a supersonic bullet that just stops at 90 ft. (if it were that 1 pound rock would kill anything it hits)...so its basically just throwing something with vigor.
I think of it like this
stand on the other side of the room and lob a 1lb rock at me...it would probably draw blood...maybe even knock me out.
stand on the other side of the room and lob 500 ball bearings (1 pound worth) at me...in one big handful - worst case I probably get a pretty good headache. best case i'm just angry.
none of the bearings would have enough energy to really do anything....but still, damage for creativity's sake.
and it'd be fun...especially when the pipe is aimed at the enemy and half of the bearings roll out onto the ground before the spell is castl ('cause that's what happens with a pipe full of ball bearings with an open end when you lay it flat). In fact, he probably gets so distracted by all the action and excitement that he wouldn't realize it until he takes a step, requiring a successful dex check to prevent falling on his face and spilling whatever remaining ball bearings he has, causing his close buddies to also make dex saves or fall flat on their faces.
you could launch ball bearings mortar-style without risk of the bearings falling out...until you're thwarted by an umbrella.
Damage wise, if they had gone to the trouble of building this weapon I would probably give them a bonus to damage so instead of just the 3d8 I would probably let it have a +1-4 depending on a d20 roll at creation with the +4 given for a nat 20. If my players go to lengths to create something or I can see some planning has gone into it then I will give bonuses.
I thought of finding myself in a situation where I was unarmed and near an enemy. I have Fog Cloud and Form Water. I'm a Rogue with low level Sorcerer Spells. So I Cast Fog Cloud and use Form Water to create a dagger.
Then sneak attack.
Is this a legit use of the spell Form Water? If so, what are the properties of an Ice Dagger? Is it a standard dagger, a +1, does it do frost damage too.
Likewise, could you make a an Ice Key?
This might be obvious, I'm pretty new to this.
So am I the only one that is thinking of the spell ice knife in Xanathar’s guide also I would say that you could make it a weapon because it is simple weapon but not a plus anything and would be some bludgeoning as it says in the form water spell I would allow it but with some limits

(Dwarven b/c hight limitation, halfling and gnome work too)
The illusion created by Minor Illusion can't move. So it might be a good way to confuse enemies at a distance, it's not going to give you close to the effects of Mirror Image.
Now if you use it in conjunction with something to throw your voice you might get the enemy to attack it once.

What about using Animate Object on a city's walls? You are laying siege to a city, use the spell to effectively bring some of the bricks in the wall to life and make a hole that the bricks would then attack through?? You can animate 10 objects with medium targets counting as 2 so 5 medium objects (and remember that's anywhere between gnome and goliath size). Would make a sizable hole in the wall using 5 medium objects and a nice little attacking force that have 40hp each and 13 AC or just get one huge hole in the wall with 80hp
They'd have to be loose bricks in the first place to attempt that. The animate objects spell makes clear that any firmly secured object doesn't gain a movement speed.
I have a basic rule that creative uses of spells do not do more damage than similar leveled spells. It's a function of power. The main advantage is selecting damage type or it could get advantage to hit or give disadvantage on a save. That's kind of what advantage/disadvantage is there for.
Prestidigitation is the most OP spell in a campaign I've GM'ed. For the low, low cost of an action, you can clean or dirty 30 square centimeters of any surface, and as a cantrip you can spam it. If they could identify him, CSI teams want to have words with the party Wizard, I'm telling you...

Yeah I had only read as far as the stat blocks, didn't notice there was more afterwards. Love the snow idea, pure creative genius lol
To be fair you could also use the create side to drown an enemy by filling their lungs with water!
You are not able to do that as the lungs would not be a targeting a container object. You would be targeting a creature instead and the spell would fail.

Heat Metal + Mending can't work anyway, as Mending has a casting time of 1 minute and so you can't concentrate on Heat Metal at the same time.
From Sage Compendium: "Concentration is required when casting any spell, including a ritual version, for longer than 1 action."

Heat metal just does 2d8 fire damage without a damage roll or saving throw and you can use a bonus action to keep it going.
