Here is the problem with the explosion of classes/features/species combinations. A DM simply cannot keep up with all of them, and has to rely on the players to get them right. Guess what. Many players can't get mechanics down correctly, and some outright cheat.
The dm doesn’t need to know all of the numerous combo’s possible. But a dm absolutely should review all of the character sheets and make sure that they understand the abilities that are being used by players in the games they are running. If you don’t then how on earth can you run your games with appropriate challenges? How do you know if the party will tpk or walk all over combat encounters or come to a complete stop because nobody has even halfway decent face skills or some other crucial thing? If you don’t read through and understand the characters and what they can do then you are in effect dm’ing blind. If you write an adventure with 25% based underwater, and nobody has the ability to breath underwater then you need to provide potions or items or a friendly npc that can cast water breathing, otherwise that entire section of your adventure will be completely ignored. That’s simply bad dm’ing. Your statement makes no sense whatsoever.
Yes, people cheat, they also break the speed limit, drink alcohol under age, cheat at poker, cheat in monopoly. Generally people only tend to cheat on dice rolls, or simply misunderstood a rule. Every other aspect of their character sheet should have been vetted prior to the start of the game. Removing choice from all players because some people try to cheat is just needlessly punishing players who have never done a thing wrong in their lives. Like I said earlier, if a dm doesn’t want to allow flying races or gunslingers or whatever in their games then they can simply ban them. But saying they (as an example) should be completely removed from the game is a complete over reaction not to mention selfish. How about you play the game and have fun the way you want, and other people play the game and have fun the way they want, without pointing fingers and saying “you’re having bad wrong fun”?
Some people just do not understand exactly how hard it is to propurly DM a game anymore.
Some say that if the Dm does not keep on top of the players every combat and level up then its the DMs fault for not knowing what the players can do. Add in all their spells and special feats and abilities and yes it gets stupidly hard. This leads to Dm's fudging far more than they ever should just to keep the story line alive. One slip and the Big bad could be killed off without anyone even realizing it. Now he has to step in and do something spectacular just to same the bad guy for the end game. God like intervention, A new spell or spell like power ONLY the NPC bad guy now has, some new powerful ally steps in and helps. No matter what now the DM has to wing it. The PC's react to this new ability or what ever and the whole game changes. Their tactics change or they decide on a different path to the outcome or they go out of their way to acquire a new power to counter the new power of the Bad guy.
5 Pc's are hard to follow, and in 5 NPC's to counter them and all of their abilities and things get stupidly hard. Unless you nurf the NPC's abilities or reduce the variety of opponents sometimes down to just one Big Bad guy and no allies for him. And that just does not sound thematically correct, everyone works with allies. From Devils to local gangs everyone has allies.
I say drop a BUNCH of special abilities and classes (subclasses) and give the DM back the chance at a little better control of the game thus giving him a better chance at creating his world and story for the players to act in.

I’ve been dm’ing and playing for 30+ years, during lockdown I was running 4 games per week and one of those games had 9 players in it. Since lockdown ended the number of games came down to 2 per week due to other time constraints. Not only is it absolutely possible for a dm to understand a character’s abilities in games the run - its an absolute requirement. [REDACTED]
Notes: Gatekeeping is against site rules. Thank you
they need a true healing class in 6e, and also they should keep the spell system. besides a healing class the classes are pretty much good. maybe add a Gnoll as a class and maybe make the ranger a little more powerful. also maybe as a sub race of a haregon they could add a half bunny person or something idk.
A class centered just around healing honestly sounds pretty dull to me. There are plenty of classes and subclasses that can heal just fine. Including divine soul/celeistal warlock to give classes that normally can't heal options. There are already options for people in the game who want to focus on healing, I think an entire class with healing as the sole focus would be a mistake. This isn't an MMO with a hard set trinity system, I like that classes have flexibility to go in different directions and aren't shoehorned into juts one role generally.
I literally have to tell the players how their abilities work sometimes. Especially the newer players. I mean you hit the nail on the head when you said you ban most books because you don’t have time to read them. That’s fine and your prerogative - in YOUR games. Why should you have the right to tell the game designers to ban those options from MY games?
I don't want all the options outright stripped away and banned.
But I would like to see that they are not included in the PHB or "core" rule books. Leave them to each specific expansion book or world setting. By placing things into the PHB the designers are essentially saying they are approved for ALL worlds and should not be removed without unbalancing the game they designed. And we all know that is exactly how they will be treated. This also includes feats spells magic items and skills or any type. Leave each to their specific book.
By the way this is the basic way you get more people to buy more stuff.
i also like what ive seen so far in the ONE DND character species and classes. however the " DND becoming virtual" i dont like. ( watch ONE DNDS new VTT is BAD for DND heres why. thats on youtube
I agree with you

I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).

You misquoted me. I never said I banned all those books because I did not read them. I banned them because I DID read them, or the marketing information or the tons of articles on them from sites like this. I am experienced enough to know what will work, and what won't, in my game. I have zero control on what content each DM allows in their game. But I will say this about another misquote from you: Why should you have the right to tell me that game designers can force these options in MY game.
I can definitely state the opinion that yes, all this new material, which is OP, can add further stress to a new DM or a DM that is short on time, and such a DM should work from the starting stance of "No, I am not allowing material X, until I have time to vet it."
Um... if they're "options" they, by definition, don't have to be in your game.
I am concerned that they are moving to make the game more abstract, for lack of a better word. A big reason people said 5E was able to get so much momentum was ease of play and approachability. GURPS and Hero System are nowhere near as successful commercially for a reason. Some of the class ideas I am hearing sound like a harder sell to new players.
This game is turning into one of the most complex games on the market.
The next step will be to remove all classes and just let players pick skills abilities feats and boons heck every other option ever mentioned in all the books..
Let their imagination go wild.
Let the DM worry about learning each and every character and all their abilities and working them into a story line.
I’m mostly just not sure what the Wizard class is going to have as their special bit when everyone seems to be preparing spells in the same way. Honestly I really think the three spell list and making everyone prep off the full list casters idea is a massive detriment to Arcane casters. Bards have already been shafted so hard it hurts by being reduced to community college Wizards. Spontaneous casting itself has lost most of its zing once you didn’t have to prep individual slots, but those classes still had more and stronger class/subclass features to make up for it. I worry we’re going to lose too much role distinction on this front based on what I’ve seen
Main thing I want is for this edition to not have such a fear of new classes. I don't want 3.5e or even 4e level bloat, but there is definitely room for more concepts which don't work as well when squeezed into a subclass.
PHB classes + Artificer, Psion/Mystic, Warlord, Swordmage, and Summoner/Pet Class are all classes which I think would work better alone than as subclasses.
I'd have no objection to blood hunter being officially added in a wildmount book, but I don't think it's 'needed' as most of its stuff can be done by other classes.
i would like some new classes. add some humanoids who were not races before as races like a Gnoll. but i am very much afraid for dnd when the creators try to make its digital.
I am a gaming dinosaur but I think going digital is a good thing. That way when they have a fix or an update to something they can just fix it and not have to wait for a new book to get published.
And the content has been digital for quite a few years already. I am much more likely to look up something these days in the DMG on DND Beyond than I am to pick up my book
For me one of the greater benefits of digital is sharing my purchased content with my players. My last group was most less than advantaged youth without funds. So I purchased the content and made it available.
Have they talked about that going forward? I feel like I heard something about that, but can’t place it. Keep in mind that until relatively recently D&DB operated independently from WotC.
I would like to see a way for them to give digital content for free with the purchase of the physical book.
Scan a code inside the book and register for the digital content.
They can’t do this, or people will just walk into Barnes and Noble, scan the code, and walk back out.
They tried something like this with dragonlance, where you buy it as a print+digital bundle on their store online, and it was a few buck cheaper than buying them separately. But WotC had some logistical issues, and communicated poorly about how long it would take for someone to receive the print product. So people were upset because they didn’t get the print version for a while after the release date. Also, people outside the US got hit with extra shipping costs that actually made it more expensive for some of them than buying separately, from what I remember.
