So, loligagging on an Eldritch Knight Build, and wanted to get some opinions on which of the two was a better option for getting access to Warlock's Hex spell... As a house rule, if you know a spell from a once a day feat or other ability, you can use a spell slot to cast the spell again because th3 table generally believes this just was overlooked in the original build of the game... so this removed the advantage of Fey Touched's level 1 and 2 spells being cast more than once per day, but not necessarily the free 1-day use
Question really comes down to whether having those extra 2 Cantrips from Magic Adept is better than access to a free use and available Misty Step spell AND a +1 Mental Stat
Cantrips from Eldritch Knight would be Booming Blade and Blade Ward for defensive tanking. Blade Ward will be necessary with the squishy party build and needing to face tank
... Cantrips from Magic Adept would be Green flame Blade and Eldritch Blast... debating swapping one out for mage hand, but plenty of casters in the group for utility cantrips. War magic is clutch with either of these
Ehhh, I really wouldn't take blade ward. if you wanna tank, you'd be better off using the dodge action. If your party has a ton of utility casters, definitely double down on the offensive cantrips. Now, is your build going to be sword-n-board, or is it going to be a two-handed GWM build? If the former, yeah, magic initiate might be better just to have access to both BB and GFB. Otherwise, GWM doesn't mesh all that well with the SCAG-trips since two GWM attacks is better than one cantrip use.
I think Fey Touched is superior. Even with your house rules, following RAW it's very much superior. Well of course depending on what you want, if you really want the cantrips, sure, magic initiate is better.
I am getting Fey Touched on my Eldritch Knight to find that Gish theme, the magic warrior with teleport and magic damage whenever he strikes (hex).
Personally I think at later levels you won't want to use GFB or BB, as your extra attacks could be doing more damage...but regardless Fey touched is great for an Eldtritch Knight as you get more spells that aren't Abjuration or Evocation....
RAW, you're better off using Fey Touched to get hex because you can cast it multiple times per day. On the other hand, you risk blowing through those 1st-level spell slots like they're candy. And you'll arguably have better uses for Concentration once 2nd-level spells open up at 7th-level.
I will say, if you're going to do this, take up the Unarmed Fighting Style. Use hex to disadvantage their Strength/Dexterity checks and grapple them. You'll still deal the bonus 1d6 necrotic damage, and your punches will still be 1d8 + Strength modifier bludgeoning. You're just also getting a free 1d6 bludgeoning damage and locking down enemy movement. Get someone else to cast enlarge/reduce on you and you're set.
For Blade Ward, I'll probably keep it until at least level 11, because of the ability to still make an Attack with my bonus action due to War Magic. Most of the difficult fights are usually scaled up considerably with monsters that have no issue hitting AC 21 regularly, so the half-damage seems more important than Dodge. I get the impression that Cantrips for attacking still isn't seen as very important for offense after getting your third attack, so the Magic Initiate is looking less and less necessary next to Fey Touched's Half-Feat + Misty Step access.
The intent is to play a Defense-Build Eldritch Knight, with a sword and board playstyle, (21 AC with mundane gear), so yes, this is why I was looking at getting both Green Flame Blade and Booming Blade, but as mentioned above I think I am favoring a defensive option (at least initially) with Blade Ward over both both SCAG weapon cantrips. Hence, wavering between taking Magic Initiate to get additional cantrips~
Obviously Warcaster will be either my level 4 or 6 feat to accommodate this. The Grappling Style seems like it could be interesting Jounichi, but i don't Hex would apply to the Grapple Damage, as there is no Attack Roll made to HIT or apply damage... I think in a different character archetype besides the one I have in mind, I might consider it.
Thanks for the responses, as it seems there is a heavy lean towards Fey Touched
..how else can you cast a spell with a weapon + shield combo? Unless you drop your sword/weapon at the end of your turn, you cant cast Shield or Absorb elements as your Reaction... I don't even think it is RAW to switch between 1hand and 2hand during a reaction action
Also, booming blade plus opportunity attacks is very clutch on stopping a goon from getting away without disengaging

No, the bonus damage from hex would not trigger from the free grapple damage. But it would trigger from all of your successful punches. And you're making them easier to control, for as long as the spell lasts.
Ah, you're right. Didn't think of EKs with a shield. My bad. I guess to cast a spell you could drop your weapon and summon it back with a bonus action on the next turn. Perhaps Warcaster is great if you plan to be rolling with a shield.

Keep in mind, the spells you get from Magic Initiate use the spellcasting ability from the class you chose. So if you choose Warlock to get Eldritch Blast and Green-Flame Blade, they run off your Charisma score, not Intelligence. I would argue that part was very much intended, since when choosing the Magic Initiate feat you are linking it to a specific class(and RP-wise it represents dipping into a little bit of that class' magical ability), which is why Artificer Initiate specifies Intelligence.

True, but you generally don't care so long as the spells chosen don't rely on your spellcasting ability. Want to pick up blade ward and booming blade? They work just as they would for any other class. But choosing the same class as your current one (or in the Eldritch Knight's case, wizard) gives you more options. Chief among them is the ability to cast that free 1st-level spell more than once per long rest.
If you just want Magic Initiate, pick wizard as the class. If you really want hex, and there are probably better spells to concentrate on, pick Fey Touched.

Jounichi, what other spells do you think are worth the concentration for a level 1 spell? (Sorry, specifically for Out of Class spells i meant)

Fey Touched always. Not only because it’s a half-feat, but because Misty Step is super useful.

Why do you want to spend a feat on Warcaster? I'm not sure it's worth it for EKs.
