GiSH: gish refer to a class of githyanki warrior of great skill, often combining melee combat and the use of magic. It is more simply, a character build that is skilled in both physical melee combat and the use of magic.
Do you find a 3 level dip in fighter/battlemaster a good choice for any gish character? It provides a fighting style, action surge, and maneuvers, of which I find bait and switch, party, and riposte to be my favorite. Do you have a favorite class dip better? Do you like different maneuvers?
Psi Warrior. It's literally cannot be more thematic, since the term "gish" in the githyanki language can refer to psionics as well as arcane crafting. Mechanically, Psi Warrior is a great pair for a Wizard, as its abilities scale off the Int mod. And since the number of psi is are tied to your proficiency mod rather than class level, it scales well for multiclassing. The downside is you don't get your best abilities until 7.
@theboozecube9977. Nice. Good idea, especially if you go with an enchantment or mentalist theme with your caster class(es). @sfPanzer. I was thinking any spellcaster type of class that took a martial build, such as bladesingers, hexblades, swords bards, etc. Subclasses such as arcane tricksters and edritch knights already feel like a gish type of class, so didn't really consider them.
It used to be you could be a straight Githyanki wizard with decent strength and still be a strong Gish because of the inherent armor and weapon proficiencies baked into the race. But now that MOM took that away, you really need to multiclass with Fighter at some point. If you want to be mainly a fighter, then I would say go Psi-Warrior with a 2-level dip in War Wizard. If you want to mainly be a spellcaster, then War Wizard with a 2 to 5 level dip in Fighter. 5 levels in Fighter gets you extra attack but it also means you'll only ever be a Lvl 15 Wizard so no 9th level spells for you. Most will say an extra attack isn't worth it. So in that case, start with Fighter with LVL 1 to get heavy armor proficiency, then go Wizard. Take another level of Fighter whenever you want to get Action Surge then stick with Wizard the rest of the way.
