So I’m about to level up my 4th level Half Orc great weapon fighter and I’m tore between staying fighter for extra attack or going barbarian for rage. I’m the only front line combatant with a AC of 16. So what do you guys 🤔 thanks
When playing a melee class, never multiclass before getting extra attack.
Also, what's your goal regarding barbarian? It's generally not a great class for dipping into for a few levels and a lot of its features don't work if you're wearing heavy armor.

The goal is, i think, just Rage. It could also be that 1) their DM houseruled out the heavy armor restriction, 2) they forgot about the heavy armor restriction, or 3) they’re wearing medium armor.

AC of 16? Is that from chain mail? What are your Dex and Con scores? My gut says stay with Fighter, at least through the ASI/Feat at Level 6. If your primary concern is having an AC of 16 as the primary frontliner, there are simpler way to improve upon it than multiclassing.

Breastplate +Dex 14, con of 16, 18 str , gwf and orcish fury champion subclass and I’m a bit sneaky, must say I got a +1 longsword last night so I’m considering switching to sword and board with a 18 AC rather then the maul I’ve been wielding,I’m less concerned about my AC and more concerned about healing we’ve got lots of long range fire power but the only other HTH guy is the cleric so if he go’s down ….
one level dip in Barbarian
Rage gives me 1/2 damage most of the time with 50 hit points and a 18 AC + a 1D8+9 attack and 3d8+9 on a 10% crit
5th level fighter
two attacks for 1D8+7 and twice the chance to crit
I had always planned to dip barbarin at 7th but but it seems that it might be best to dip early

I'd stat fighter till lvl 6, then Totem Bear Barbarian at leas till 4(ASI). Bear Barbarian whle raging gives you resistance to all damage except Psychic(So every hit, every spell except psych deals half damage. If you rage reckless you have advantage on all attacks, giving you more opportunity for the Crits you are chasing as a Champion If you stay Barbarian till 9th you get an extra damage die on your crits as well.
I'd stick with Fighter until at least level 6 for the extra ASI/feat that no other class gets at that level. You can then decide if whatever subclass feature you get at level 7 of fighter is worth it or if you want to go into barbarian at that level.
Level 6 fighter, than totum barbarian till at least 6. I might push to lvl 9 for additional crit die. After that I'd switch back to fighter adding asi's/feats and stick it out till 11 for 3rd attack.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

I would level up your fighter once more then take some levels in barbarian and Paladin and then go back to fighter
