For the feat Savage Attacker, it states "...when you hit a target with a weapon, " I can assume that means bows/crossbows/darts.
For a Battle Master, using Maneuver, Sweeping Attack states, "...hit a creature with a melee attack roll using a weapon" I assume the weapon is not bows/crossbows/darts/etc.
Keep in mind, though, that while Sweeping Attack only works with melee attacks, most of the other maneuvers do not have this restriction. For instance, Trip Attack works with any weapon, and Menacing Attack works with any attack at all, including spell attacks. Read them carefully; it's easy to get them mixed up.

Your understanding is correct in both cases.
