I play with people that make VERY strong builds and I need to keep up! I am playing a fighter and there are a lot of different answers about the best martial archetype but most people say either rune knight, psi knight, or battle master. Which one is actually the best? Or if another is better please tell me. 🙏🙏🙏
The usual disclaimer is, the best one is the one you’ll have the most fun playing. But before anyone can give you a better answer, we need to know, Best for what?
For example, I played a rune knight through level 8. It was really fun. Great tank, great grappler, not so great at damage. But even with lackluster damage numbers, no one in my party would say I was ineffective. I mention this because many people seem to think damage output is the only way to measure if you have a good character. Those people have a very simplistic view, I’d say.
Relatively new. I almost took Purple Dragon Knight because I wanted to be more bardic but being a 1st time player was intimidated learning the magic system along with rest of core rules. I kept seing Battlemaster as the "A" tier subclass...but being me I had to be different. I went Cavalier and quickly be came unsatisfied with the 1 trick i knew that never hit! Hind sight...Should have went Battlemaster because the maneuver system so much more of an arsenal then most fighter subs. I think as a Battlemaster you can make make a better PDK, a better Cavalier and really tailor your martial class when it comes to options.
But I dont think the BM can do what the Echo/Eldritch or Psi can do when it comes to Spells.
As long as you build properly, meaning you take either sharp shooter or great weapon master, keep up with your main stat, and avoid multiclassing, any fighter can shine and keep up with minnaxers thanks to their incredible chassis.

I need to know which one is the most well rounded. I think we are going to level 20.
Any of thrm
can be well-rounded depending on the way you build them. That said, probably just go battlemaster. It will give you most different options.
Thank you! This was very helpful and I will finally be able to not be the weakest in the party!

What about the best archetype for a low level fighter tank?
Eldritch Knight because of Shield spell.
