Can anyone give me some suggestions for non-magical trinkets and vanity items a fighter might carry? The first thing that popped into my head was a tankard, because no self-respecting fighter isn't also a rowdy drunk.
50’ of rope, like every character in the game. If he’s superstitious, some kind of lucky charm
If he’s sentimental, a reminder of someone, a ring his mother gave him or something. A trophy from the first monster he killed. Or from every monster he kills. A drawing of something or someone meaningful to him
A horn or whistle or something to alert allies of trouble
Something related to a hobby e.g. wood and a knife for whittling, paper and ink for sketching.
Heirloom Weapon (mundane, like father's simple longsword etc.)
something to remember a lost fight and never forget the possibility of defeat (broken blade, torn piece of armor from a dead friend).
A usual piece of equipment / background item, worn in an unususal manner (sheathe worn upside down, piece of Banner as a headband/ bandana / tied around the hilt of the main weapon)
modified weapon purely for sentimental reasons (spear, the hilt of which is carved with memories from battles, habit of carving into it during downtimes / rests)
piece of paper with a prayer to speak before battle
Holy Symbol (maybe battleworn / damaged) as a keepsake or lucky charm
I am also being followed by an old blind badger too which is my only friend which sleeps next to the stuffed badger. Damned ugly and antisocial Half-Orc Fighter (cha 6!)
Thought I would go for something unusual with an odd story attached to flesh my char out a bit
Anything that every other person would carry. There are no items that *only* doctors or pilots are able to carry so why would it be any difference for a fighter?
Anyways, here are a few suggestions that someone could have in their pockets or backpack.
- An extra pair of sock and wool mittens for when it gets cold.
- Contract of employment as an extra in a local playhouse.
- A book bookmarked with a birthday card from grandmom.
- A small souvernir pin from that place you visited that one time.
- Prophylactics.
- A guitar or other instrument.
- A bag of candy.
- A roll of toilet paper.
A tankard honestly seems a bit pointless. You usually get your drinks in one when you buy them.

Maybe trinkets from battle. A broken blade. An ear.
Depending on the fighter:
Gleaming Armor that never gets dirty
Sword that cleans itself is sheathed.
Cloak of Billowing
Pipe of Smoke Monsters
I specified non-magical. These aren't even mundane magical trinkets; more like souvenirs.

These are all great suggestions. Thank you.
