The Echo Knight closes to 10 feet away from the enemy, uses a bonus action to manifest an Echo 5 feet behind the enemy and attacks via the Echo. Might this attack qualify for advantage as a surprise attack? I know it’s ultimately the DMs call, but is it reasonable to think advantage might apply?
Anyone else come up with innovative tactics for the Echo Knight?
If you are 10 feet away, theres a good chance the enemy knows you are there. A surprise round (not surprise attack) is determined before combat begins, and if the enemy is aware of you, you don't get a surprise round. It's a nice try and has potential to work if you didn't fail your stealth check. It's a very edge case, either you are very sneaky, or the enemy is an idiot. You've probably also heard that the echo is considered an object, thus no flanking for advantage either.
I was thinking it might be more like attacking while invisible, which gives advantage. Enemy sees character,, focuses on them, then gets hit from an unexpected angle.
The Echo appears neither Hiding nor Invisible so the enemy knows it's there - unless the DM decides otherwise. There are no facing rules in 5e either so there's no concept of behind or in front of.
Basically - no - can't be done - and I think a lot of DM's would see it as an attempt to powergame.
