From people who have played an echo knight how often/fast does your echo die in battle. I'm gonna play one and I go back and forth on doing two weapon fighting with duel wielder to get that bonus action attack and two different weapon types used with the feat and fighting style or two handed weapon with the feat and probably the +1 to ac fighting style. As fun as my half-orc running into battle with a battle axe and a war hammer I obviously don't want to do the duel wielder if an echo typically dies in 2-3 rounds using up the bonus action attack when I can just keep a great axe and maul on hand and choose one per battle.
And yes I know this will be something that is heavily dependent on party structure/dm/etc.
My echo typically lasts awhile as my DM and I established that the echo as described in the text is very obviously not tangible being translucent gray. Sometimes AOE stuff will wipe the poor bugger out.
My echo has only been killed once (other than when my fighter went down). I'm not sure if that's the DM ignoring it because he's metagaming or if it's just been lucky.
My Echo seems to last for quite a while. Honestly, there's so much an Echo Knight can do with their Bonus Action that Dual Wielding seems counter productive. Whether or not it's defeated, I'm almost always either summoning it to a new location to face a different enemy or teleport swapping with it for whatever reason. The only reason I don't do one of those things is usually because I took a bonus attack from Great Weapon Master.
But your play style probably varies wildly from mine. My point is just that the Echo's survivability is rarely what takes up my bonus action.
Yeah you can't take dual weapon fighting, bonus action economy is a thing with Echo Knight. Take Sentinel to force the DMs to think about that echo and it will die more I promise lol
Depends entirely on the wording of the AOE. My point is that the wording of most AOEs, spell effect or not, does not damage the echo.
dragon breath, for example, specifically targets and damages creatures.
Agreed on target, if an AOE targets creatures, it does NOT hit the echo. The best though is fireball. Targets creatures and "flammable objects". Is the Echo flammable? I'd argue a gray, translucent image is not, but it's vague lol

Some sort of “magic object” targeting AOE? The echo is an invalid target for most AOEs.
AoE DMG still hits the echo and will kill it instantly, the echo is just invalid for most targeted spells.
