One of my favorite official campaigns is out of the abyss, but there is no sourcebook for it. It could be called Gromph Baenre's guide to the underdark or something like that (Archmage Gromph Baenre is the guy who summons the demorgorgon (did I spell that right?)) Say yes or no
For the Underdark there is some good stuff in the 3rd party space for 5e. AAW games put out a 3rd party adventure called Rise of the Drow. If you're looking for an Underdark sourcebook this is def something to check out. Also there was just a kickstarter for the Survivalists Guide to Spelunking
WotC is/has been working on three classic settings. We've gotten Ravenloft, Dragonlance is one for sure, the Underdark could be.the third.
I don't believe that the Underdark has ever been treated as a setting in the game's history, just part of the Forgotten Realms and Greyhawk settings.
However, we're well overdue for a new monster manual, and that could be themed around the Underdark.
The previous three editions all had a setting sourcebook for the Underdark. I think the distinction between it being a setting by itself and being part of a larger one is fine enough that it doesn't have to matter. We'll see.

That would be a huge letdown if they counted the Underdark as a setting rather than just a region in the Forgotten Realms, given how few setting books they're set to publish.

"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Compared to the SCAG, I don't know about that. If done properly an Underdark sourcebook would be useful to me regardless of what setting I'd nominally be playing. Or maybe the Realms is still one of those three classic settings despite of there already being one sourcebook released for a region of it, and an Underdark book could be one of several slated releases. The content matters more to me than the setting itself, to be honest.
All that aside, I don't see a whole lot of other settings that both would qualify as "classic" and are still licenced or owned by WotC. Blackmore and Greyhawk are not licenced anymore, so that has legal ramifications. Birthright and Council of Wyrms aren't really classic settings or even settings at all in my book, what they really offer is more of a different type of D&D. Kalamar is to the best of my knowledge still 3rd party. Ghostwalk and Rokugan didn't have enough impact to be classics, and Rokugan would involve licencing as well. The real candidates as far as I can tell are Mystara, Planescape, Dark Sun and Spelljammer. Mystara hasn't been supported since 2nd edition, and had to take a back seat to the others back then. Dark Sun has some thematical issues that might prevent a new release. Planescape (which I love) is pretty high concept and that can make it a hard sell. Spelljammer references have shown up here and there, so on balance that could be the most likely of those four. But an Underdark book is arguably the more guaranteed success, so who knows.

I don't know the details, the wikipedia page about D&D settings just says they are. I know Gygax has been working on and publishing Greyhawk content pretty much until he died though. I expect that licence was complicated (Living Greyhawk ran until the same year of Gygax' death, 2008, while Gygax Games was working on republishing Castle Zagyg). I'm fairly sure WotC still owns the name "Greyhawk" but anything beyond that I have no knowledge of.

Also Sword Coast got its own sourcebook (albeit not a great one) and its part of a larger setting so I could see it happen. I would welcome it too as I found the Underdark very fascinating.
They could also reprint Out of the Abyss with it and add some more options/monsters/side quests based on the new setting book. Give us a Quaggoth Race, a few Underdark based subclasses (Demon Druid, Gloomrager Barbarian, Demonic Bloodline Sorcerer) some more magic items of the Underdark, maybe a few spells and call it a day.

I think you're misreading the syntax of a sentence there.
It says that some settings, including Blackmore and Greyhawk, are no longer published or officially licensed. It's not actually saying that Wizards lacks the license to them, it's saying that Wizards is neither publishing them nor licensing them to other publishers.

That's possible. Blackmore is part of Mystara now though, so not really an option, and licenced or not Greyhawk was still being published by third parties through 4th edition.

I am pretty dumb when it comes to trademarks/patients/copyrights.....
Since he died in 2008 it would be 2078 before the entirety of the Forgotten Realms becomes public domain? or at least large parts of it?

The Realms were created by Ed Greenwood, not by Gygax (Gygax' setting was Greyhawk), and he's still alive. IP rights are complicated though.

ah yeah good point.....I wonder what was under Gygax copyright? off topic so I will drop it but just got me thinking....
Anyway I hope for an Underdark setting book if they are game as I find it immensely interesting!

There's been one for 2nd, 3rd and 4th edition, so even if not as part of the 3 classic settings effort I think chances are we'll get one for 5th edition as well sooner or later.
