At the moment I am playing a monk. I recently stole our rouges'hooded lantern and he says he is going to steal it back. My solution is to have a cap made with a loop for it to hang from my quarterstaff and to be affixed to it. Now having said that... If I were to make an attack with this weapon; from a dm's perspective, is this an improvised or a quarterstaff that may deal one time fire damage?
It was never supposed to be a weapon more of a means to keep it in my sight and out of the hands of the thieving ass in my party. But if need arose I will probably be on fire. My character is not very cautious.

I'd call it an improvised weapon. A lantern has weight and mounting it to a quarterstaff would significantly alter its balance and usability.

It's just a staff that also acts as a lightsource.
