I am planning on making a sword and spear build sorcadin (2 paladin - X sorcerer, draconic bloodline, variant human). As our DM gives us a feat at lvl 1, I have two feats two start of with. As a first feat I'm choosing war caster, as this is quite essential to cast spells when having both a shield and a spear in your hands. However, for the second feat I'm somewhat in doubt. For the second feat I would like something spear-related. I have encountered three different options that appeal to me: two official feats (Pole-arm Master and Spear Mastery (UA)) and one homebrew (Hoplite - which my DM is willing to allow). If none of these would work, the piercer feat would be an option as well. To be sure we're all on the same page:
Pole-arm master:
When you take the Attack action and attack with only a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to make a melee attack with the opposite end of the weapon. This attack uses the same ability modifier as the primary attack. The weapon's damage die for this attack is a d4, and it deals bludgeoning damage.
While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon.
Spear Mastery (UA)
• You gain a +1 bonus to attack rolls you make with a spear.
• When you use a spear, its damage die changes from a d6 to a d8, and from a d8 to a d10 when wielded with two hands. (This benefit has no effect if another feature has already improved the weapon’s die.)
• You can set your spear to receive a charge. As a bonus action, choose a creature you can see that is at least 20 feet away from you. If that creatures moves within your spear’s reach on its next turn, you can make a melee attack against it with your spear as a reaction. If the attack hits, the target takes an extra 1d8 piercing damage, or an extra 1d10 piercing damage if you wield the spear with two hands. You can’t use this ability if the creature used the Disengage action before moving.
• As a bonus action on your turn, you can increase your reach with a spear by 5 feet for the rest of your turn.
You gain a +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls you make with these weapons.
As a bonus action on your turn, you can change your fighting stance to increase the reach of your spear with 5 feet, take a defensive stance and gain +1 to AC as long as you're also using a shield or prepare for charge (same option as spear mastery). Your stance lasts until the beginning of your next turn.
Several factors have to be taken into account. First of all, I would be using an Yklwa (similar to a spear, but dealing 1d8), meaning that the second benefit of spear mastery doesn't apply in this case. Second, sorcadins do have a few options for their bonus action (although limited) such as quickened spell (green flame blade or booming blade) , searing smite, ... So there would be some competition for bonus action (maybe making the bonus action benefits of the feats quite useless?).
Any tips are welcome!
