Back in the 80's I had the Red and Blue boxes for D&D. I played a few games with cousins but never found others that wanted to play in a regular campaign. Then the satanic panic stuck and I was barred from playing D&D. So being the rule lawyer that I am, in high school, I played TSR's Marvel Super Heroes or GURPS and other Steve Jackson products but never, ever D&D.
In later years I devoured the Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance novels. I played the gold box games ( that was just me and the computer right not really playing D&D).
Fast forward 30ish years.
I was watching the Honest Trailers Commentary for Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse. Joe and Spencer made a big deal about this Matthew Mercer guy that was doing voice work for Spiderman Noir. They mentioned Critical Role and I thought "never heard of it". Being out of work I was able to binge the first campaign. At the beginning of campaign two, there were all these advertisements for something called D&D Beyond.
Finally, I said, "I'm a grownup I don't need to be beholden to a promise I made before I was old enough to vote".
I bought a paper PHB, the digital sourcebooks here at DDB, and dug the red and blue dice out from the back of my childhood closet. I figured I would sign up at my local game store and find a game. This was in November of 2019.
Then the world shutdown. Seriously, it is not my fault. No demons were summoned.
I contacted the cousin from years before and now I play in three campaigns using DDB, Roll20, and Beyond20.
If you are a returning player what was your catalyst? Mine was apparently Joe Starr.
TLDR: Thanks Joe and say hey to Spencer and Dan if you see them.
I came back to D&D due to a co-worker who was playing D&D with friends from all over the world, using Zoom and such. He told great stories of what they were up to. I expressed that I wished I could play but had no one to play with. He started up a campaign and put several of us in it who had no one to play with - he was to be the DM. Then life intervened and he had to pull out, but by then we were all invested so I offered to take over as DM. It has been a year... still going.

I just saw this and it makes me so happy! Welcome to it!
I used to play AD&D in the late 80's-early 90's. I stopped when the group all went to college in different parts of the country. Fast forward a couple of decades and a friend of mine told me about the DnD Next playtest in 2012, I think? I joined him and a few friends to try it out and have been riding the 5e train ever since.
I started playing with the basic set in 1978, actually before AD&D, which came out for Christmas that year. I dove in for a couple of decades and then resurfaced. I had a great group in college (the story for I6 Ravenloft is a classic), Played a little 2nd, played a few weeks for 3rd but one player's munchkinism 'forced' the DM to escalate as well, and us regular players were destroyed in the arms race. I got back in for 4E, one of the FLGS here I was their Steve Jackson Games rep, one of the Men-in-Black, and D&D Encounters showed up, the 2nd sessions the DM was a no show, so I said, I don't know the rules, but if you can give me a minute I'll glance at the adventure and promise we'll at least have fun! 12-14 seasons later moves and life put a stop to that. Had a long hiatus for personal reasons, but I'm back in college (at 53!) and thought, I heard there was a large Online D&D presence, and decided to Just Do It! PAX Online and D&D Celebration were my intros to 5E, basically, a 10 days Con, and I haven't looked back since, and don't expect to ever stop playing again.
I cam back to D&D because my daughter saw the books on a shelf and asked me to show here how to play. So I can a one shot adventure with each of us playing a character. Next thing she asked me to run a game for her birthday with a few of her friends.
I now run an 1) 18 month long , weekly campaign, 2) a weekly campaign for my online EveQuest guildies most weeks and 3) another campaign about once a month for some of my daughters friends.
