I've searched through the threads by Googling various versions of my problem, but I can't find anything. I have created characters that I want to remain in a campaign but I no longer want them to appear in my My Characters list. I added them to the campaign and unassigned them, but they still appear in My Characters. It even says "(Unassigned)" beside the campaign name.
This is working as intended, I presume. For those without subscription, all characters have to count against the limit.
edit: to clarify, "unassigned" just refers to the character in the campaign. For that campaign, it's not assigned to any player. You still own it. If it gets assigned to another account, it will no longer be in your character list - but you also won't own it anymore.
Thank you for your quick response. To clarify, I no longer want to own it. I want it to exist in the campaign for someone else to claim. So am I to understand that until someone does actually claim it, it will remain in my account? And the only way to have it exist in the campaign without having it in my account is for someone else to claim it?

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
