I was reading though Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft and was wondering what happens to the original location after it becomes a Domain of Dread. Let me give an example.
CW: Depiction of violence and gore.
Captain Ormed Helton was one of the greediest, cruelest, most vicious pirates to sail the ocean. Cunning and brutal in equal measure, he plundered hundreds of ships and spared no one in his quest for loot, be they merchants, military, or other pirates. He was well known for torturing people for information and "ending" their misery in sickening fashion. If he had no use for them, he'd strap them to the front of a loaded cannon and fire it, sending blood and gore spraying out in a fine red mist. If he had use for them, he'd skin them like an animal, treat the flesh, and use it patch the holes in his sails while the skeleton was animated and ordered to work forever.
On his secret island, Death's Cove, he had a fortress built to store his loot, rest after battle, and keep prisoners who disobey his orders. Over time, he grew paranoid that his crew would betray him and steal his gold, so he planned for their demise, one by one. After he killed the last of his crew, the Dark Powers took him, his ship, and the island into the Mists.
The question is this: When the Dark Powers take him and the island, do they A: Simply make a copy of the island in the Mists and place him there? B: Remove the fortress and place it on a copy of the island? C: Completely remove the island and place it in the Mists, therefore making it disappear from the Prime Material plane. D: Something completely different?
I guess you could really do it however you want, but I took it more as making tainted copy of the original location and placing the Darklord on it unless stated otherwise in the background of the domain.

That sounds really good!
