My party and I are brand new to D&D, and I feel like I’ve been hassling my DM with a ton of questions. This one seemed fairly straightforward, so thought I’d see if I get could any help here.
My Paladin just hit level 2, and as I was leveling up on the app, I got a bit confused about spells. My charisma is 18 (17+1 from Dragonborn), and not sure if that +4 modifier effects this or not. The app asks me to select 5 spells to slot. I was under the impression that Paladins know all their spells, and the limiting factor is how many spell slots they have. If I’m wrong there, any correction would be appreciated. If I’m right, I need to figure out how many spell slots I have, so I can plan ahead on divine smite uses and spells and such. I thought I read something about Paladin spell slots being half of character level, rounded down, which would give me 1 spell slot. Do I only have 1 spell slot at level 1? That seems low. Is the app giving me 5 because of my charisma modifier? That seems high. Or is the correct number neither 1 nor 5?
I would appreciate any help...I’m a pretty quick learner, but this is all still very new to me, and I’d like to have it all sorted out before our next session, so that I don’t have to take up any playing time figuring this out, or so I don’t use divine smite on the first monster that appears, only to find out I only had 1 spell slot. Thanks for your time!
Read the Spellcasting section on the paladin page for more detailed information. Short version, though, is "You prepare the list of paladin spells that are available for you to cast, choosing from the paladin spell list. When you do so, choose a number of paladin spells equal to your Charisma modifier + half your paladin level, rounded down (minimum of one spell). The spells must be of a level for which you have spell slots." The spell slots are above that section in the table. You start with 2 spell slots at level 2. You can have more spells prepared than you can cast.
The number of spells you can have prepared and the number of spell slots are not related. As a paladin you can have a number of spells prepared equal to your charisma modifier plus half your Paladin level, so as a level 2 paladin with an 18 for Charisma you can have 5 prepared spells. You can only prepare spells if you have spell slots equal to that level, so right now you can only prepare 1st level spells. You can swap any and all spells you have prepared each time you finish a long rest. At level 3 you choose a subclass and each subclass has a different list of spells you will always have prepared, these do NOT count against your number of prepared spells.
To find out how many spell slots of a given level you have take a look at the Paladin class table. The columns to the right of "Features" tell you how many spell slots you have of 1st through 5th level. Right now as a level 2 paladin you have 2 1st level spell slots.
Good luck out there
