Hey everyone. How flexible and open is D&D to making you your own sub race? For example if I wanted to make a sub race of elves for example called “Midnight Elves” yet they still have exactly the same feats and stats as High Elves - just that they are a group of High Elves that have adapted to night life etc how achievable and viable is that? If I wanted to make it a PC character would DM’s be willing to let me play my own made up sub race?
It's not inconsequential to drop an entire new ethnicity of a race into a game world, so that's a question only your actual DM can answer. Not for me to tell a DM I know nothing about how to handle his setting I also don't know anything about.

Gameplay wise, it's theoretically not too hard to just take an existing subrace, and give it features comparable in use to an existing one as a template to keep it from being OP. But story wise, don't just drop this into your DM's lap at the game, make sure to discuss it with them.
Are you asking about creating a Homebrew sub-race so all the neato abilities and such appear correctly when you use the D&D Beyond Character Builder tool? It's probably possible, I don't know. I find the Homebrew creation tool nearly impossible to use.

No I wasn’t talking about the created tool, I was just saying in general about using high elf stats but saying that they are a sub race of high elf.
I guess a way of getting around a “midnight elf” is to just play a high elf gloom stalker ranger?
As has been said before, you will need to talk to your DM. If all you want is to change the name of your race, I can't imagine any DM objecting. If what you want is for NPCs to recognize what a Midnight Elf is, for there to be lore around them that people would know, then that's something else entirely.
If what you want is to look just like a Drow, but not suffer any of the penalties normally associated with them, that goes double.
Yeah. Talk to the DM about it. Some may be strict and not allow it, most that I've ever played with would be willing to work with the idea you're presenting, since it's just a story/flavor thing and not you trying to homebrew an OP subrace etc. But you should ask and not make assumptions about it. None of us can answer for your DM.

Talk to your DM about it for sure.
