I'm really enjoying the whole concept of a being that was created for the sole purpose of battle/fighting/war, and then finding a meaningful existence after the war is over.
Does a Warforged deal with PTSD? What other skills besides those which are used for death and destruction would a Warforged develope and perfect?
In a world of fantasy, I'm trying to reasonably think about the journey of such a created being.
There are tons of tropes that can be applicable, as well as numerous - a lot of the time quite heavy - issues and philosophical and ethical quandaries. Not every group will be equally happy to deal with some of these, but there's parallels to for instance slavery, child soldiers and racism. There are questions of legal autonomy and civil rights. Aside from PTSD, there's possibly guilt - both over actions during the war and survivor's guilt. A warforged might have a desperate need to belong, be part of a community, find roots. Another may be consumed with anger and seek revenge or retribution. Some will revel in their skills and abilities, others might want to simply live out their lives going unnoticed. There will be some who will see these as individual problems they want to deal with for themselves, there will be others who will try to be advocates for all warforged.
Because of this complexity, warforged can be expected to try to hone all manner of skills. Some will want to pursue art, as a manifestation of them being living beings with a soul that surpasses mere existence. Some might choose to become diplomats, trying to use words instead of swords. Others might become farmers, for the joy of making things grow. Others yet could seek to find answers to fundamental questions as scholars and philosophers. There are likely those who will try to take what they think they're entitled to by any means necessary, becoming criminals or warlords. Some might turn to religion, others may have a spark of magic to nurture. Honestly, anything is possible. More so, anything is plausible.
