If my party is fighting an NPC with a magical tattoo, and they defeat the NPC, will the tattoo disappear and the needle appear next to the body? Seems like according to TCoE, needle = ink = tattoo, so when you unattune (aka, die a violent death at the hands of the noble party), the tattoo become lootable, like a magic sword or shield.
Is my assumption correct? If so, does anybody else out there homebrew it so tha magical tatoos are consumable items: you get it applied and it's permanent. And if you die, the magic fades and just a plain tattoo is left behind.
When your attunement ends (eg by dying) the tattoo disappears and the needle reappears. So the needle would be findable, but unless the players see the tattoo and note it's gone now, there might be a check of some sort required to identify it.
By RAW, the magic tattoos aren't even tattoos - they're just things you wear that look like tattoos, and you can take them on and off as easily as taking on or off a set of magic socks.
My particular table considers that to be moose manure and has ruled that magical tattoos are permanent. if they require attunement, you are permanently sacrificing that attunement slot, or at the least you don't get to remove the ink even if you're temporarily not attuning to its effects. Frankly, we've not had any cases of the Tasha's tattoos at our table, but the idea is that once you get it, it's on and a part of you until you die.
The magic doesn't necessarily fade if you're killed, either - it's there, just quiescent until/unless the marks rot away. if somebody wants to try and skin a corpse to gain the magic tattoo for use elsewhere - and that is sadly a consideration I've needed to ponder at my table T_T - the magic is not necessarily entirely lost. It's usually far easier to simply get a new tattoo of the same type than to try and 'steal' some dead guy's ink, but it's conceivable that a villain might possess a unique mark, not available anywhere else, and their skinned ink could serve as a blueprint of sorts for it.
Look. People get gruesome at this table sometimes, okay? Don't ask about the magical parasites that turn your entire bloodstream into needles. That was not a happy-jolly game...

Same here - “tattoo’s” that you can don & doff? What absolute tosh
anyway the argument of “magic” etc and we can’t equate the situation to RL… still just IDK - BS at our tables
my character gained one last night, but it is a Boon from their God and it is permanent
RAW the tattoo becomes lootable based on the language " If your attunement to the tattoo ends, the tattoo vanishes, and the needle reappears in your space"
That said if you're the DM. Even if you establish that's how Tasha tattoos work, nothing requires the npc tattoo to be a Tasha's tattoo. For instance your NPC may have been enchanted in a backstory established process/ritual/ect. That leaves them with a tattoo that is unlootable.
Edit: for what it's worth I think of the Tasha's tattoo like a durable version of the temporary tattoos I had as a kid so I don't make them unremovable
