I'm trying to design a new character, but i'm getting hung up on what class to make him.
Essentially he is a deep Gnome, but instead of growing up in the Underdark, he grew up in the sewers (I wanted him to be Skaven, but DM is insisting no homebrew). The "themes" i'd like for this character are shadow, and poison. Because of that my DM suggested a Gloom Stalker Ranger for its ability to slip in and out of shadows unseen. But i'm also tempted by an Arcane Trickster. With the expanded spellcasting, i could bring in spells/cantrips like Infestation, poison spray, and ray of sickness.
Also i will be taking a feat at lvl 4.
Any thoughts? is there another option i'm overlooking?

If your DM is okay with official playtest material, Circle of Spores Druid could be a fantastic pick for their necromantic and poisoning based powers.
Could go multiclass gloom stalker for 5 lvls then take 3 lvls in assassin or 3+ in arcane trickster
