I've had an idea for a character that I want to play that is a spellcaster that focused entirely on telekinetic abilities. The concept being that he would use magic to do combat maneuvers, maybe wield weapons, up until they could actually cast the proper Telekinesis and various Hand spells.
So far, aside from taking the Telekinetic feat early on, there don't seem to be many options to manage that. Am I missing something, or will I have to venture into the world of homebrew?
I have a character that's flavored like that! Well, kinda. He's flavored as a half-illithid using Tasha's Custom Lineage and the telekinetic feat.
He's a Psi-Warrior fighter that uses thrown weapons (daggers) I have it flavored that he throws them with his mind and kinda keeps a hovering "belt" of daggers around him for ammo.
Psi warrior comes with a lot of cool psychic themed abilities, but if you plan on being primarily a caster, maybe multiclassing can help?
I think what my main advice is, don't be afraid to reflavor. Any spell can be a "psychic ability" with proper description!
Your DM may let you flavor things more. Like flavoring that your weapon attacks are with telekinesis as long as you don't try to cheese things by say, using telekinesis to attack with a 2h weapon and saying 'technically my hands are free so I can also use a shield' or things like that.
The Catapult and magic stone spells can easily be reflavored for telekinetic flavor.

definitely this! At my table, if something is reflavored, all of us usually tell the DM "Trust me, I won't use this for any mechanical benefit"
So like if you wanna flavor using a shield as a "I psychically deflect the blow". make sure you understand that you still need to have that shield hand "occupied"

Yeah. I can't speak for every DM of course, but in generaly I find people are pretty accepting of reflavor as long as you're not trying to use it to cheese things mechanically.
Start with Mage Hand, Magic Stone, and Unseen Servant. Mold Earth and Shape Water also fit. Catapult, Earth Tremor, and Floating Disk are all good first level spells. Arcane Lock, Cloud of Daggers, Earthbind, Knock, and Levitate are among the second level spells that can fit the telekinetic theme.

Have fun with that idea! I like it.
