It suddenly occurred to me that there is something missing from the PHB, at least in 5E. I've only ever played 5E and I don't have any of the older versions to check. But once I realized it was missing, I was shocked, appalled and completely disgusted.
Wizards of the Coast, how could you? I trusted you, and you completely let me down.
It isn't in the PHB, it isn't in Xanathar's, it isn't in Tasha's, and it isn't in ANY of the official books. And it is completely, totally, and 100% unacceptable in its absence.
There is no "towel" listed in the equipment section.
How in the world can anyone be a brave adventurer without their trusty towel? I mean, I know technically a towel is more of a hitchhiker item, but what is an adventurer if not a self-propelled hitchhiker?
WotC needs to rectify this egregious error IMMEDIATELY. Ideally it should be standard issue in most, if not all, of the starting packs (explorer's pack, entertainer's pack, dungeoneers pack, etc.), but barring that, it should definitely be part of the "Other Adventuring Gear" available from general merchants.
