What would you consider to be the scariest dnd monster? I wanna do a type of writing project featuring dnd monsters as the center of horror stories. So, I wanted to know what the community's thoughts were on the terror factor of the classic monsters. Also if this project gains any traction, I'll make sure to credit you for the idea once i publish it.
My nomination would be the Carrionette from Van Richten’s Guide to Ravenloft. Though masters of the “creepy murder doll” aesthetic, and capable of hiding in plain sight, their true horror comes from their soul swap ability. With this ability, Carrionette is capable of changing bodies with its target, so the hapless adventurer becomes trapped in a doll’s body, while the doll takes over the adventurer’s living flesh.
I scared a party once with a doll. It's hair elongated and entwined with a party members taking control of the individual. But this was in ravenloft setting so was apt.
Im currently working on a low level pre dragon heist story. About scarecrows coming to life in undercliff and scaring the farmers (but the main bbg are some imps). I plan to throw in a red herring about a witch in the woods. I found sometimes reading from the original grimm's fairy tales helps (the version before it got watered down for kids) but with some clever thinking you can turn normal everday objects into something sinister.
