DM'ing a game now and love using this site, but in the future I will be playing a character in a campaign with friends. Wondering if there is a way to "hide" what race you are from the other players in the game.
Obviously my DM will know what I am but I want to play something not obvious and if D and D Beyond list my race then the other players will see it in the campaign.
Wish no one had to worry about people using out of game knowledge but people. Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
Yes, in character that makes sense. Out of character, not so much. Keeping information from the other players makes you as a player look suspicious.
Having helped DM a character who wanted to hide the fact they were a changling, and currently playing a Dhamphir that also wants to hide that fact I don't see this as a big deal. The reason was for story, and secret reveals between the party members (each of which has secrets) was part of the 'getting to know you' with appropriate roleplaying.
But I would also say, this is only ok, if the group around you is ok with that type of play. I could see it being misunderstood easily.
If I were a player on the other side of the fence, as it were, I wouldn't mind. It would be easier for me to roleplay if I didn't know something that my character wouldn't know. So long as the DM knows and is able to deal with it, it's interesting finding information out as the story progresses.

If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
As previously stated this is a role play question. I was looking for a technical solution to the issue. I did not mean for this to become a conversation about the merits of doing so. I have my reasons. I understand that not everyone likes to role play or create characters who are complex but that doesn't make one suspicious.

There is no built in way, but you can make a homebrew copy of the race and change the name to something appropriately mysterious.

Ah, excellent idea. Thank you.
Why is hiding your PC's race from the other players important? Generally, that kind of behavior in a player isn't really seen as a good thing.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
changeling....shifter...van richten lineage. i can see a character not wanting anyone to know
