I have had an idea for some alternate building ideas. My idea is that instead of all the stat bonuses coming from Race. You would get a +1 to two stats and then the background gives you a +1 to one stat. For instance the Acolyte could give a +1 to wisdom. The Sage a +1 to Int. A Soldier could choose a + to either Str or Dex based on the option on the Soldier table. Obviously that will require some work to determine the bonus for a given background. If someone creates a custom background it would be up to approval for the stat to match and make sense.
What I am wanting to know is how can I replicate this in D&D Beyond? I can see how to reduce the number of the bonuses in the race but not sure how to have a background add a bonus to a stat.
I could also see an alternate of having a background give a feat.
Unfortunately it does not look like you can add generic features to homebrew backgrounds. At this time you'd need to workaround with something like a homebrew magic item that grants the appropriate stat bonuses.
It's an interesting idea for sure, but not how 5th edition D&D was designed to work.
As always you're welcome to do what you like in your own homebrew games of D&D, but I don't think it's likely that D&D Beyond will be modified to allow this.
Like Grinnz says, the only real option is to create homebrew magic items. Homebrew backgrounds can’t grant ability bonuses or feats. However homebrew magic items should be able to do ability bonuses. Since it is so far 5e standards, that sort of work around is apparently your best option if you want it to happen automatically.
An easier option might just be to list the bonus in the background description, and then the player can manually add it as an “other modifier” on the Abilities tab.
