Is the Goon Balloon in the new Monstrous Compendium Volume 1 WotC's homage to the alien in John Carpenter's movie Dark Star? Dark Star photos third row far right column, at least on my screen (on mobile it might vary). As soon as I saw it, I immediately thought of Dark Star (although I never actually saw the movie)
I have no idea, but the resemblance is uncanny. I haven't seen Dark Star in over 30 years. Wouldn't surprise me if there's a nod in that direction. Spelljammer has little references to all sorts of sci-fi tropes, often of the B movie variety.

I don't know o the Goon Balloon dates back to the original Spelljammer books, but it's possible it's always been a homage/shout out like that.
