I wanna challenge you to try this with your players as a DM or take this idea to your DM as a player.
It's gone pretty well with my group but I'll let you decide what you think.
So most groups have a "Forever DM" but our DM let's us players DM our own campaigns so that we gain so DM XP and our DM gets to use his own characters that he's made so it's really a win win for both the players and DM. The only rules we use for that is we have to get an ok from the DM and the other players, let the players know to bring new characters to not mix up equipment and we can't piggyback off of someone else's campaign.
I encourage you to try it and let me know how it goes and let me know what you think.
Having players rotate DM responsibilities by running one-shots is fairly common, so while not much of a challenge, it is certainly a good idea.
It is nice for everyone to have some experience DMing for the sake of sharing the burden, and it is also helpful for players to understand what goes into DMing in order to make them better players. Players who appreciate the DM's investment are less likely to overcomplicate the experience with erratic/selfish behavior.
Yeah, this isn't a new idea really. Both my wife and I have campaigns (currently she's doing Tales from the Yawning Portal, I'm doing Lost Mine of Phandelver), and we just run whichever person has their prepared. Usually me, but my wife occasinaly will do hers.
The only issue is that you do lose focus. Having multiple stories being told simultaneously do subtract from each other somewhat, kind of like reading multiple books simultaneously. TftYP doesn't have much story so it's less of an issue for us, but if you run, say, Rime of the Frostmaiden alongside Waterdeep: Dragon Heist, you may have a subtractive effect. You just have to decide where the balance is.
