Just to put a dose of reality on this thread, the original creator of Spelljammer was not consulted at all for this iteration. Jeff Grugg posted that on Facebook. I am sure that the fact that the original mind behind the entire concept not being consulted will in no manner affect the new finished product that holds zero allegiance to the original design.....I am sure it will hold true to its roots, and at the same time satisfy every consumer under the age of 30.
I can't speak for everyone on this thread, but I don't need it to be a copy and paste of the original. I want spaceships, crystal spheres, and space D&D. If I wanted it to be exactly the same, I would just use an adaptation.

As a consumer WELL above the age of 30 (much closer to twice that number) I am very much looking forward to getting my hands on this set.

Same, this is the most enthusiastic I have been for a 5e product, ever.

You may want to spell the guy's name right first before you start proclaiming irreverence afoot.
This is a hype thread, you're more than welcome to do a deeper dive into your misgiving by setting up a "fear and trepidation at spell jammer 5e" thread. Frankly the "maligned Jeff Grubb" grousing in Reddit and elsewhere totally misinterprets Grubb's surprise at Spelljammer becoming an integral product within 5e's multiverse. conceit. I don't think there's an offense taken, and let's maybe wait and see the actual product. I was never deep into Spelljammer, and a little surprised how passionate folks seem to about it, but from what they've shown so far, it seems to track with its origins.
I'm looking forward to the set.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
WotC signaled clearly announced its position on canon some time ago. At the end of the day, fidelity to an entrenched labyrinthine and esoteric canon goes against growth. I don't know if Jeff Grubb has been involved much with 5e, unlike say a bunch of AD&D and 2e talent who gathered under the Monte Cook banner to put out Planebreaker. Was R.A. Salvatore consulted about Rime of the Frost Maiden, which is considered one of the better hardback adventures (and has a Spelljammer tease)? Not being in touch with someone who hasn't touched the IP for over 30 years isn't necessarily a bad omen and certainly doesn't invalidate work quality of a forthcoming product.
Whatever "slight" possibly done to Jeff Grubb, if he even feels slighted, goes back to the working conditions of TSR. I think with the exception of Dragonlance, everything produced for D&D has been "work for hire." When you leave TSR (and now WotC) you leave behind what you did, and even if you did do something, the studio could do something entirely different with it while you're there. One way of addressing the aforementioned canon agnosticism of 5e D&D is this multiverse they keep talking about. Spelljammer, and I'm betting Planescape holds aspects of it in some capacity, are easy properties on hand to connect that concept to D&D continuity that is recognizable to old school lore heads but without the sort of fidelity or fealty to lore that makes new players too much of a learning curve. To some the Sunderings are important things integral to their games, in others they didn't happen, still others play Storm Kings Thunder and don't know what the Forgotten Realms are. All of this is playing D&D, and I'd say it's a good thing too.
I'm wondering whether replacing or merging Phlogiston with the Astral Sea gives Githyanki raiding parties better access to the prime material worlds.
i'm confused, i'm over 40 err 30 and i pre-ordered already. so am i supposed to feel insulted or slighted? if people on the interweb don't invent emotions for me i don't know what to feel!!!
I'm definitely excited, but I really hope they fix Giff before the books come out. The UA version, other than the swim speed, is just another generic brute race. They don't even get firearm proficiency. They're hippopotamus people, not british space hippos.
I wouldn't get too excited. What we're going to receive is like a brief outline of spelljammer. 124 pages of monsters and an adventure and 62 pages to cover the new races, likely new equipment, some statblocks for vehicles and some basic Spelljammer rules? You'd really be better off buying some of the old resources from DMs Guild and adapting it to 5e, if you want detailed content.
Temper your expectations, because it's not going to be a robust experience. I'm not saying don't buy it, but for 192 pages covering a monster manual and a twelve part adventure, it's liable to be a disappointing experience.
As a relatively new player to D&D (like, since, what, 2019?) I've seen a lot of cool ideas. Maybe it's the space nerd in me, but I always thought Spelljammer was a pretty cool idea, and the little tidbit references to it in Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Rime of the Frostmaiden sounded like insanely cool ideas here. Along with books for Dark Sun, Greyhawk, and Dragonlance (The last of which we actually do seem to be getting!) Spelljammer, and pretty much any setting involving crossing planes, is an absolute must for me!
Now, to actually make the money to buy the set. TvT
But but, there's a SCREEN, and a cool poster map, and a slipcase!
I mean not here, but you know.
That said, you're right that for the most part 5e goes light on details or leans more into evoking possibilities instead of really fleshing out spaces it introduces to the a game. Exception being BG:DiA, that gazetteer is an awesome city setting stand alone.

I am looking forward to it, mostly because I am hoping for a playable Illithid/ Mindflayer. With the squids being the most active in this setting, I really do hope that they are finally a playable race as well.
Yes, there are homebrew or UA Illithids but an official one sure would be nice too.
Who is hyped for Spelljammer: Adventures in Space!! Have you already pre-ordered? I certainly have!!!
Everyone has been waiting for this 🚀🚀🚀

Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus is probably my favorite 5e book so far, right up there with Mythic Odyessys of Theros, ngl
